Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has shared details of one of the most difficult periods of his life, revealing that he experienced serious financial hardship only a few months after getting married.
Speaking during an interview on Tope Olowoniyan TV, the actor recounted how several setbacks occurred almost simultaneously, leaving him uncertain about his future.
According to Arukwe, he tied the knot in August, but by November of the same year, he had lost his job, creating significant financial pressure for his young family.
The actor explained that the situation became even more challenging after he was involved in a car accident around the same period. With his annual house rent due every January and family responsibilities increasing, he found himself constantly worrying about how to meet his financial obligations.
Arukwe said life changed further after the birth of his first daughter, as school fees and other expenses added to the burden.
While many people celebrated the festive season each year, he admitted he often avoided unnecessary spending because he was focused on managing bills and ensuring his family remained financially stable.
The actor also reflected on his decision to leave the corporate world in pursuit of a career in acting. Having spent years working in telecommunications and retail, he later secured another role in the banking sector.
However, he realised his passion lay elsewhere and wanted to build a future in the entertainment industry.
Despite his determination, Arukwe said his wife encouraged him to delay becoming a full-time actor until their finances became more stable. Her advice, he noted, was based on the immediate needs of their family rather than a lack of belief in his dreams.
He also revealed that he had little financial support to rely on during those difficult years. While describing his father as someone who believed in tough love, Arukwe said he learned to face life's challenges independently. Although his mother was supportive, she was unable to provide much financial assistance.
Looking back, the actor believes those experiences shaped his resilience and strengthened his determination to succeed.
Since fully embracing acting, Arukwe has established himself as one of Nollywood's respected performers, featuring in successful productions such as A Tribe Called Judah and Love in Every Word.
Today, his story serves as a reminder that success often comes after periods of uncertainty, sacrifice and persistence, proving that difficult beginnings do not always determine how a journey ends.
