Nollywood actress and entrepreneur Tayo Sobola, popularly known as Sotayo Gaga, has explained why she has been less visible in the entertainment industry in recent years, revealing that motherhood and business became her primary focus during the period.
The actress said her reduced public appearances were never an indication that she had abandoned acting. Instead, she described the break as a deliberate decision that allowed her to concentrate on raising her child, expanding her businesses and preparing new creative projects.
Speaking in a recent interview with Saturday Beats, Sobola said every phase of her life has been guided by purpose, adding that she embraced motherhood without allowing it to limit her ambitions.
Choosing Family Without Abandoning Her Dreams
According to the actress, stepping away from the spotlight gave her the opportunity to reflect on her career while investing time in her family and personal growth.
She explained that motherhood arrived just as she was preparing to return to acting, prompting her to focus on her new responsibilities without feeling pressured to remain constantly in the public eye.
“Those periods I was off the scene were for personal reflection and growing my brand. By the time I was ready to return to acting, motherhood set in, and I embraced it without distraction,” she said.
Rather than seeing motherhood as a setback, Sobola described it as another chapter of her life that deserved her full commitment.
Balancing Parenting And Entrepreneurship
Despite spending more time away from movie sets, the actress insisted she remained actively engaged in business.
She disclosed that she continued managing several entrepreneurial ventures while simultaneously developing ideas for future film projects.
According to her, parenting did not prevent her from pursuing her professional goals because she successfully balanced both responsibilities.
“Truth be told, motherhood didn’t stop me from doing other things. I am a serial entrepreneur and run several businesses, so while I was busy parenting, I was also working on brand positioning, creating new designs for some of my fashion brands, and developing movie scripts, among other projects,” she said.
Her comments highlight the growing number of Nollywood stars who combine entertainment careers with successful businesses outside the film industry.
Working Quietly Behind The Scenes
Sobola noted that many people assumed she had become inactive simply because she was no longer making frequent public appearances.
However, she maintained that much of her work was happening behind the scenes rather than in front of cameras.
She explained that building businesses, strengthening brands and preparing new projects often require long periods away from public attention.
“Although I wasn’t very visible in the public space, I was extremely busy strategising. Simply put, I am still very much relevant in the industry,” she said.
The actress believes that visibility alone should not be used to measure relevance, stressing that consistent preparation is equally important for long-term success.
A Private And Emotional Personality
Beyond discussing her career, Sobola also shared insights into her personality.
She described herself as someone who naturally prefers privacy and intentionally keeps her circle of friends very small.
According to the actress, many people wrongly assume she is emotionally detached because of her reserved lifestyle.
Instead, she admitted that she is deeply emotional but chooses to protect her peace by limiting the number of people she allows into her personal life.
“We all have our personal struggles because no one is born perfect. The ability to rise after every challenge is what makes one strong. I am a loner who loves to keep my circle very small. One thing many people don’t know about me is that I am an emotional person,” she said.
The Story Behind Her Name
Sobola also reflected on the relationship between her real name and the stage name that made her popular across Nollywood.
She explained that both identities have contributed significantly to her career and complement each other rather than compete.
“The brand and the name have always worked together. They are like Siamese twins that benefit from one another. Many people identify more with the name Sotayo Gaga, but in reality, neither of the two names is bigger than the other. I simply know when each is most appropriate,” she added.
Her remarks offer fans a glimpse into the balance she has maintained between her public image and personal identity throughout her career.
As she prepares for her next creative chapter, Sobola’s reflections suggest that her time away from the spotlight was less about stepping back and more about building a stronger foundation for both her family and her professional future.
