Global music icon Shakira has opened up about her decision to collaborate with Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy on the official song for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, revealing that his unique voice and musical style made him the ideal artist for the project.
Speaking during a recent interview, the Colombian singer said she knew from the beginning that the track required a powerful male vocalist who could complement its energetic Afrobeat-inspired sound.
According to her, Burna Boy stood out as the perfect choice because of his distinctive vocal delivery and commanding stage presence.
Shakira explained that while the anthem incorporates influences from different genres, including Caribbean rhythms and elements of R&B, its strongest foundation is Afrobeats.
That musical direction made Burna Boy an obvious collaborator, given his role in taking the genre to a global audience.
The award-winning singer also disclosed that she had admired Burna Boy's artistry for a long time and had always hoped they would work together.
When the opportunity arose, she reached out to the Nigerian star, who immediately expressed interest in joining the project.
However, she admitted there was a period of uncertainty after Burna Boy took several weeks to send his contribution. Despite the delay, Shakira remained optimistic that the collaboration would eventually come together.
Her patience was rewarded when the Grammy-winning singer delivered his verse, which she described as exactly what the song needed. She added that once she heard his vocals, she could no longer imagine anyone else performing on the record.
Released in May 2026, the World Cup anthem, Dai Dai, quickly became one of the tournament's defining songs. Beyond celebrating football, the single also supports the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, with proceeds helping to finance educational opportunities for children around the world.
Shakira and Burna Boy first performed the anthem during the tournament's opening ceremony in Mexico City before reuniting at the FIFA World Cup final halftime show in New Jersey.
Their performance, alongside several international stars, further highlighted the growing global influence of Afrobeats and Burna Boy's status as one of Africa's biggest musical exports.
