Marvel Studios has officially confirmed British actor David Jonsson as the new Black Panther, bringing a new chapter to one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most iconic franchises six years after the death of Chadwick Boseman.
The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, where the studio also revealed that Black Panther 3 is set for a worldwide theatrical release on December 15, 2028.
Jonsson, 32, will portray Prince T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint, the son of the late King T’Challa and Nakia, played by Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.
The character first appeared briefly in the emotional closing scenes of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022, where audiences were introduced to him as a young boy living away from Wakanda with his mother. The third instalment will now explore his journey into adulthood as he embraces the responsibility and legacy attached to the Black Panther mantle.
Marvel’s decision finally answers years of speculation surrounding the future of the beloved superhero franchise following Boseman’s death in August 2020.
Boseman passed away at the age of 43 after privately battling colon cancer, a diagnosis he kept hidden from the public while continuing to deliver memorable performances across several major productions.
His portrayal of King T’Challa in the 2018 blockbuster Black Panther became one of the defining moments in superhero cinema.
The film grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide, broke numerous box-office records and became the first superhero movie ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Following Boseman’s passing, Marvel Studios made the difficult decision not to recast the original T’Challa out of respect for the actor’s legacy.
Instead, the story continued in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where Letitia Wright’s character, Shuri, stepped into the role of Black Panther after the death of her brother.
The sequel received widespread praise for the way it honoured Boseman’s memory while expanding the story of Wakanda.
Angela Bassett also made history with her performance as Queen Ramonda, becoming the first actor from a Marvel film to receive an Academy Award nomination for acting.
With Jonsson now taking over as T’Challa’s son rather than replacing Boseman’s original character, Marvel has found a way to preserve the legacy of the late actor while naturally moving the franchise forward.
The casting has already generated excitement among Marvel fans, many of whom have followed Jonsson’s rapidly rising career in recent years.
The British actor has built an impressive résumé with standout performances in Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk, HBO and BBC’s critically acclaimed drama Industry, and the romantic comedy Rye Lane.
His performances have earned praise for their emotional depth and screen presence, qualities many fans believe make him an ideal choice to carry one of Marvel’s biggest franchises into a new era.
Marvel also confirmed that several familiar faces will return for the third instalment.
Letitia Wright is expected to reprise her role as Shuri, while Winston Duke returns as the fan-favourite M’Baku.
The studio also announced that Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has joined the cast in an undisclosed role, marking his long-awaited debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Although details about the film’s storyline remain tightly guarded, the project is expected to explore the next generation of Wakanda’s royal family while expanding the mythology established across the first two films.
Acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler will once again direct the movie, completing the trilogy he began with the original Black Panther in 2018.
Coogler has remained closely associated with the franchise since its inception, helping transform Black Panther into one of Marvel’s most culturally significant and commercially successful properties.
With David Jonsson officially stepping into the role of T’Challa II, Marvel appears ready to usher Wakanda into a new era while continuing to honour the unforgettable legacy left behind by Chadwick Boseman. The announcement has already sparked excitement among fans eager to see how the next Black Panther will shape the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
