Veteran Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has weighed in on the long-running debate over the value of formal education, saying he believes there is some truth to the popular saying, "school na scam." While he was careful not to dismiss education entirely, he argued that academic learning on its own is not enough to guarantee success.
Drawing from his personal experience, the actor explained that some of the biggest lessons that shaped his career and life came from people outside the classroom rather than from textbooks or lectures.
Jim Iyke also reflected on meeting one of his former lecturers years after leaving school. According to him, the encounter reminded him of how differently life had turned out for both of them. He said that if he had depended entirely on everything he was taught in school without looking beyond the classroom, he does not believe he would have achieved the level of success he enjoys today.
“There is some truth to ‘school na sc@m’. I am doing better than all my lecturers. I once met one of my lecturer, who is now late, on a plane and we both knew who was doing better. If had taken everything him taught me verbatim and applied it in my pursuit, I wouldn’t have been successful.
I will tell you what worked. It is what the uncles, the traders who barely went to school, told me. They told me go left at all time and never right. The father who told me to forget theories and know when to be ruth"l£ss, conform or stand my grounds and what books to read.
Some of the wealthiest men in the world did not get it from classroom. How many of them have PhD? I have a PhD holder who works for me. We can argue all we want but school is partly sc@m....”
Expanding on his point, Jim Iyke said the advice that made the biggest difference in his life came from older people he met outside academic settings. He credited traders and other experienced individuals, many of whom had little or no formal education, with teaching him practical lessons about decision-making, resilience and navigating life's challenges.
According to him, those conversations helped him understand when to adapt to situations, when to stand firm and when to make difficult choices. He also said they influenced the books he read and the mindset he developed as he pursued success.
The actor further argued that wealth and academic qualifications do not always go hand in hand. He pointed to the fact that many of the world's richest individuals did not build their fortunes solely through classroom education. Using his own experience as an example, he noted that one of the people working for him holds a PhD, saying this illustrates that educational attainment does not automatically determine who becomes an employer or an employee.
Although Jim Iyke acknowledged the place of formal education, he maintained that it is only one piece of a much bigger picture. In his view, real-world experience, practical wisdom, personal judgment and the ability to adapt often play just as important a role in shaping a person's future as what is learned within the four walls of a classroom.
