Nollywood actress Regina Chukwu has opened up about the challenges she encountered early in her acting career, explaining why she ultimately chose to build her career in the Yoruba film industry instead of the English-language sector.
Speaking during a recent interview, the actress alleged that her attempts to establish herself in the English-speaking arm of Nollywood were met with experiences that discouraged her from pursuing opportunities there.
According to her, she attended several auditions but found the environment difficult to navigate, claiming that inappropriate demands often overshadowed genuine talent.
Regina alleged that aspiring actresses were frequently exposed to situations where career advancement appeared to depend on personal compromises rather than acting ability.
She claimed that some individuals used promises of movie roles and fake production opportunities to lure newcomers into uncomfortable situations, making it difficult for young talents to succeed on merit alone.
The actress contrasted her experience with the Yoruba movie industry, which she described as more welcoming and supportive.
Although she is of Igbo heritage, Regina explained that growing up in the South-West made it easier for her to connect with Yoruba filmmakers and actors.
She said the environment allowed her to develop her craft without facing the same obstacles she experienced elsewhere.
Reflecting on her career, Regina acknowledged that focusing primarily on Yoruba-language productions has shaped her popularity in different parts of the country.
She noted that while she enjoys widespread recognition across Lagos and many South-West states, she is less known in the South-East, where many people are unaware of her contributions to the film industry.
Despite this, the actress maintained that she has no regrets about the path she chose, emphasizing that the opportunities she received in the Yoruba film sector enabled her to build a successful and lasting career.
Her comments have reignited discussions about long-standing concerns surrounding exploitation within the entertainment industry.
Allegations of "sex-for-roles" have surfaced on several occasions over the years, prompting calls from stakeholders for greater transparency, accountability, and safer working conditions for aspiring actors.
