Producers Must Protect Actors, Not Their Marriages — Biodun Stephen

Filmmaker Biodun Stephen has addressed ongoing conversations about intimate scenes in Nollywood, stating that producers should not be held responsible for the personal relationships or marriages of actors. 

According to the award-winning director, while every filmmaker has a duty to create a respectful and professional work environment, safeguarding an actor's marriage falls outside the scope of that responsibility.

Speaking on the issue, Biodun explained that her primary goal as a storyteller is to create authentic and believable characters. 

She noted that romantic relationships portrayed on screen should feel genuine to audiences, but that does not necessarily mean every production must include kissing or other intimate scenes.

 Instead, she believes filmmakers should use whatever approach best serves the story while remaining sensitive to the comfort levels of the actors involved.

The director emphasized that every performer has the right to establish personal boundaries before accepting a role. 

If an actor is uncomfortable with physical intimacy on screen due to personal values, religious beliefs, or family considerations, she said those wishes should be respected. In such situations, directors can explore alternative ways to communicate love and emotional connection without compromising the quality of the story.

At the same time, Biodun argued that actors who willingly agree to intimate scenes should not be criticized for their professional choices. She maintained that these decisions are usually discussed long before cameras begin rolling, allowing everyone involved to understand what is expected of them.

She also highlighted the importance of trust and communication between actors and their spouses. According to her, individuals who choose careers in film understand the unique demands of the profession, while their partners also have a role to play in supporting and understanding the realities of the industry. 

For this reason, she believes relationship matters should be resolved privately rather than being placed on the shoulders of filmmakers.

Biodun stressed that a producer's responsibility is to ensure actors work in a safe, respectful, and professional environment where they feel protected throughout production. 

Creating that atmosphere, she said, is far more important than trying to manage personal issues outside the film set.

Her remarks have reignited discussions within Nollywood and among fans about the balance between artistic expression and personal values. 

While some believe filmmakers should avoid intimate scenes altogether, others argue that such scenes can be essential to telling realistic stories when handled responsibly and professionally.
