Nigerian filmmaker Niyi Akinmolayan is set to take his ambitious fantasy movie Colours of Fire to a wider global audience as the film prepares to debut on Netflix on August 7, 2026.
The movie, which first arrived in Nigerian cinemas in December 2025, combines African mythology, creative storytelling, fashion, and advanced visual effects to deliver a unique cinematic experience.
Akinmolayan has described the project as an example of Afrofusion cinema, blending traditional African elements with modern filmmaking techniques.
Colours of Fire tells the story of two opposing tribes, the Blues and the Reds, whose long-standing rivalry has been fueled by suspicion and fear.
The Blues have built their influence around their expertise in fabric production and their powerful blue magic known as Elu, while the emerging Red Tribe has developed its own identity and methods.
Tensions between both communities increase after rumours spread that the Red Tribe uses dangerous powers connected to dark practices.
The conflict deepens when reports of a mysterious creature attacking blue farmers emerge, leading warrior Akinbode to embark on a mission to eliminate the threat.
However, his journey takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Moremi, a woman whose presence challenges the stories and beliefs that have kept both tribes divided for years. Their encounter forces questions about truth, prejudice, and the impact of misinformation on society.
Beyond its fantasy elements, Colours of Fire explores deeper themes such as unity, cultural identity, betrayal, love, sacrifice, and the consequences of inherited hatred. The film highlights how fear and false narratives can create divisions while showing the possibility of healing through understanding and acceptance.
The movie features a strong cast, including Osas Ighodaro in the role of Moremi and Uzor Arukwe as Akinbode. Other notable actors featured in the production include Mercy Aigbe, Gabriel Afolayan, Shaffy Bello, Femi Jacobs, Femi Branch, and Ibrahim Chatta.
Produced by Anthill Studios and Imuetinyan Productions, and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, the project represents another major step in the growth of Nigerian cinema. Netflix’s acquisition is expected to introduce the film to viewers beyond Nigeria and strengthen the presence of African stories on international streaming platforms.
With its combination of mythology, visual storytelling, and cultural themes, Colours of Fire is expected to attract audiences searching for fresh African fantasy content when it begins streaming globally on Netflix.
