Award-winning Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has opened up about one of the most painful experiences of her early acting career, revealing how rejection, humiliation and disappointment ultimately became the driving force behind her success in the film industry.
Speaking during an interview with Sunday Sun, the actress said many people only see the glamorous side of her career today without knowing the challenges she endured before becoming one of Nollywood's most recognised stars.
According to Mercy, her journey was far from smooth. She explained that there were moments when she questioned her place in the industry after facing treatment that left her emotionally devastated.
However, rather than allowing those experiences to discourage her, she chose to use them as motivation to work even harder.
Recalling one of the incidents that had a lasting impact on her, Mercy said she was on the set of Akuko Ija when fellow actor Yomi Fash-Lanso mentioned he was heading to another movie location. Believing she had also been booked for the same production, she contacted the producer to confirm the details.
To her surprise, she discovered she had been replaced. The conversation became even more painful when the producer reportedly acted as though she did not know who Mercy was, instead mentioning another actress with the same first name.
The actress said the producer later informed her that if she wanted to continue receiving acting opportunities from her, she would have to seek permission before accepting jobs from other filmmakers.
Mercy described the demand as shocking, especially after spending years working tirelessly to establish herself in the industry. She admitted the experience left her heartbroken and in tears, as she struggled to understand why pursuing opportunities elsewhere should become a problem.
Despite the emotional setback, the actress refused to let the incident define her future. Instead, she continued attending auditions, accepting new roles and believing that persistence would eventually pay off.
Reflecting on the experience, Mercy said life's greatest challenges often become the foundation for future success.
She noted that painful memories can serve as valuable lessons, helping people grow stronger and more determined to achieve their dreams.
The actress encouraged aspiring entertainers not to allow rejection or criticism to end their ambitions. According to her, disappointment is inevitable in every profession, particularly in the creative industry, where competition is intense and opportunities can be unpredictable.
She stressed that confidence, resilience and faith in one's abilities are essential qualities for anyone hoping to build a lasting career in entertainment.
Mercy added that believing in herself was what kept her moving forward, even when circumstances suggested otherwise.
Today, Mercy Aigbe stands among Nollywood's leading actresses and filmmakers, with numerous successful productions and awards to her name. Looking back, she believes the painful experiences she once wished to forget ultimately helped shape the successful woman and respected entertainer she has become.
