Nigerian singer Jaywon has thrown his support behind those who believe South African music star Tyla should not perform in Nigeria at this time, saying her silence during past xenophobic attacks in South Africa cannot be overlooked.
The singer made his position known in a post shared on his Instagram Story, where he explained that his stance has nothing to do with Tyla's nationality or her music. Instead, he argued that anyone who chose not to speak out while foreign nationals were being attacked and their businesses destroyed should not expect a warm reception.
According to Jaywon, the issue goes beyond entertainment and touches on the experiences of many Africans, particularly Nigerians, who were affected by repeated xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
He wrote:
"Nobody is angry that Tyla is coming to Nigeria. But if you didn’t speak up when foreigners were being attacked and their properties taken, make she dey her country. Not a good time."
His statement comes as more public figures continue to express differing opinions over Tyla's proposed performance in Nigeria. While some believe music should remain separate from political and social issues, others insist that celebrities have a responsibility to speak up during moments of crisis, especially when lives and livelihoods are at risk.
