Former Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha has shared how he approached supporting members of his family financially, explaining that he wanted to help them in a way that encouraged independence while also preparing for his own future.

Rather than simply giving out money whenever it was requested, Okocha said he believed it was important to have an honest conversation with his relatives about expectations. He recalled bringing everyone together for a family meeting where he explained how he intended to support them and the responsibility that came with it.

According to the football legend, any money he provided for business was meant to be taken seriously. He wanted those receiving the support to treat it as an opportunity to build something sustainable instead of depending on him indefinitely.

Reflecting on that decision, Okocha shared the exact words he told his family:

“I once called a family meeting and told my relatives that the money I give them for business must not fail .

I even bought houses for them first, so at least they will not be homeless. That way, when I retire, nobody will disturb me”, he stated.

His explanation offers a glimpse into the thinking behind the assistance he gave. Before investing in businesses for his relatives, he said he first ensured they had a place to live. By doing so, he believed they would not have to worry about having a roof over their heads, allowing them to focus on making the most of the business opportunities they had been given.

Okocha also made it clear that his long-term goal was to reduce future financial pressure on himself. After spending years building a successful football career, he wanted to prepare for a retirement where he could enjoy the next phase of his life without facing constant requests for financial assistance.

His remarks highlight a practical approach to family support—one that combines generosity with responsibility. Instead of offering endless financial help, he chose to create a foundation that he hoped would allow his relatives to become self-reliant. Housing, in his view, provided security, while business funding created a chance for financial growth.

The former midfielder's comments also reflect the reality many successful people face when balancing personal achievements with family responsibilities. While helping loved ones is often seen as important, Okocha suggested that setting clear expectations can be just as valuable as the financial support itself.

For him, the objective was never simply to give money. It was to create opportunities, encourage accountability, and ensure that the support he provided would have a lasting impact. At the same time, he wanted to protect his own future by planning ahead, believing that thoughtful preparation today could help prevent unnecessary financial strain after retirement.
