Veteran Nollywood actress Ireti Doyle has shared the surprising story behind one of the most memorable roles of her career, revealing that she initially had no intention of joining the popular sitcom Fuji House of Commotion.
Speaking during a recent interview, Doyle explained that her hesitation stemmed from the kind of roles she had been playing at the time.
She had just completed work on the television drama Solitaire, where she portrayed a refined and sophisticated character opposite veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD). Following that performance, she believed taking on a comedic role could affect the image she had established as an actress.
According to Doyle, she was convinced that audiences would associate her with more serious, polished productions rather than a light-hearted comedy series. As a result, she questioned whether accepting the offer would be the right move for her growing career.
Everything changed after a meeting with the late filmmaker and producer Amaka Igwe, who was determined to cast her in the sitcom.
Rather than persuading her with lengthy explanations, Igwe challenged Doyle's confidence as an actress. She suggested that a truly accomplished performer should be capable of excelling in every genre, from intense drama to comedy, and hinted that perhaps Doyle was limiting herself creatively.
The remark struck a nerve. Determined to prove that she possessed the versatility expected of a top actress, Doyle reconsidered her decision and accepted the role of Sisi Carol.
Looking back, she admitted that the choice became one of the most rewarding decisions of her professional life.
The sitcom quickly gained widespread popularity across Nigeria, with audiences embracing its humour, relatable characters and engaging storylines.
