The principal of a secondary school in Oyo State has shared an emotional account of her survival after spending several weeks in the hands of kidnappers, describing the experience as one of the darkest periods of her life.
Speaking publicly for the first time after regaining her freedom, she reflected on the fear, uncertainty, and unwavering faith that helped her endure the ordeal.
During a thanksgiving service attended by relatives, friends, and members of her church, the school administrator expressed gratitude for making it home alive.
She explained that every day in captivity felt uncertain, with no guarantee that she or the other victims would survive. According to her, prayer became her greatest source of strength throughout the difficult period.
She recalled that one particular week stood out as the most frightening. During that time, the atmosphere inside the kidnappers' camp became increasingly tense after reports reached the abductors about efforts by security forces to locate them.
The sound of military operations nearby heightened anxiety among everyone in the camp, leaving both the captives and their abductors on edge.
The principal said the leader of the group became visibly angry over developments surrounding negotiations for their release.
She claimed the kidnappers accused government officials of making promises that were not fulfilled, causing tempers to flare inside the camp. At one point, the victims feared that someone among them could be killed as punishment.
Adding to their distress, the captives later heard digging noises, leading many to believe preparations were being made for a burial. Fear spread quickly among the group as they wondered who might become the next victim.
However, instead of carrying out any execution, the kidnappers reportedly decided to abandon the location and relocate everyone to another hideout after suspecting that security operatives were closing in on them.
Beyond the constant fear of violence, the principal also battled health challenges while in captivity. She revealed that she fell seriously ill during the ordeal and worried that she might not recover due to the harsh conditions and limited access to medical care.
Despite her condition, she said she remained hopeful and continued praying for divine intervention. She believes her recovery, after taking only basic medication, was nothing short of miraculous.
One prayer remained constant throughout her captivity, she revealed. She repeatedly asked God not to allow her final resting place to be in the forest, holding firmly to the belief that she would return home to her family alive.
Her testimony deeply moved members of the congregation, many of whom described her safe return as a powerful reminder of resilience, faith, and hope in the face of unimaginable hardship.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the security challenges facing schools and communities in different parts of Nigeria, with many citizens renewing calls for stronger measures to tackle kidnapping and protect lives.
