Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has addressed comparisons between her filmmaking style and that of Hollywood producer Tyler Perry, insisting that learning from respected industry figures is a natural part of artistic growth.

The discussion began after the actress shared a message on social media acknowledging Perry as one of the filmmakers who inspired her career.

Funke explained that she admired his storytelling techniques and credited him with influencing her development as a writer and producer during the early stages of her journey.

According to the filmmaker, there is nothing wrong with drawing inspiration from accomplished professionals, provided a creator continues to evolve and discover a unique voice.

She noted that her career has been shaped by years of experience, continuous learning and participation in workshops that have helped refine her skills.

Her comments sparked debate online, with one social media user suggesting that although Tyler Perry has enjoyed enormous success, some of his films often repeat similar themes and character arcs.

The user argued that Funke's productions occasionally reflect comparable storytelling patterns, particularly in the portrayal of female lead characters.

The critic encouraged the actress to build on her influences while avoiding what they described as the repetitive elements seen in some of Perry's work.

They maintained that successful filmmakers should not only admire their role models but also improve upon their weaknesses.

Funke responded by referencing some of Tyler Perry's earlier films, asking whether the critic had watched productions such as I Can Do Bad All by Myself and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Her response suggested that Perry's body of work extends beyond the limited comparisons being made online.

Over the years, Funke has repeatedly acknowledged that every creative professional learns from those who came before them.

She believes that inspiration is an essential part of filmmaking and that every generation of storytellers builds on the achievements of previous ones before creating something distinctive.

The actress has become one of Nollywood's most influential filmmakers through a series of commercially successful productions.

Her movies have consistently attracted large cinema audiences and have helped redefine the commercial potential of Nigeria's film industry.

From Battle on Buka Street to A Tribe Called Judah and Everybody Loves Jenifa, her productions have broken several box office records while earning praise for their broad appeal among movie lovers.

Despite ongoing criticism from some quarters, Funke remains committed to developing her craft and encouraging emerging filmmakers to embrace learning, adapt to change and create stories that resonate with audiences. She maintains that growth in filmmaking comes from constant improvement, hard work and the willingness to keep learning throughout one's career.
