Veteran Nigerian singer Daddy Showkey has announced plans to mark two major milestones in his life and career with a week-long celebration that will honour both his 56th birthday and his remarkable 50 years in the music industry.
The iconic entertainer disclosed his plans during an appearance on the Tochi Talks Diaspora podcast, where he reflected on his decades-long journey in music and revealed that a series of events has been lined up to celebrate the achievements that have defined his career.
According to Daddy Showkey, the festivities will begin on August 4, which marks his birthday, and continue throughout the week with several activities designed to celebrate his contribution to Nigerian music and culture.
The singer explained that the celebrations will include concerts, fan engagements and special appearances, culminating in two major performances that are expected to attract music lovers from across the country.
Sharing details of the programme, Daddy Showkey revealed that one of the headline events will take place in Ajegunle on August 8, the Lagos community where he was born and raised and where his music journey first began.
The celebration will then move to Eko Hotel and Suites on August 9, where the grand finale will bring together fans, colleagues and other guests to commemorate both his birthday and his five decades in entertainment.
“Celebrating 50 years on stage. I am looking at August. My birthday is August 4. That week of my birthday, a lot of things will happen. We will have a show in Ajegunle on August 8, and on the 9th, we will have one at Eko Hotels. That would be for everybody,” he said.
For Daddy Showkey, returning to Ajegunle for part of the celebration carries special significance.
Born in August 1970, the singer spent his early years in the densely populated Lagos suburb, where he developed his passion for music while growing up in one of Nigeria’s most vibrant communities.
His humble beginnings in Ajegunle would later shape both his identity and musical style, earning him widespread admiration as an artiste who proudly represented his roots despite achieving national fame.
Daddy Showkey rose to prominence in the early 1990s, becoming one of Nigeria’s most recognisable entertainers during a period when indigenous music was experiencing significant growth.
He became widely celebrated for popularising the energetic Galala dance, a street-inspired dance style that quickly spread across Nigeria and became one of the defining cultural trends of the decade.
Beyond dance, the singer also distinguished himself through music that reflected everyday experiences, addressing subjects including love, faith, perseverance and social realities affecting ordinary Nigerians.
Over the course of his career, Daddy Showkey released numerous songs that resonated with audiences and helped establish him as one of the pioneers of modern Nigerian popular music.
Among his best-known projects are Fire Fire, released in 1991, Diana in 1996 and The Name, which arrived in 2000.
He later expanded his catalogue with songs including Ghetto Soldier and Jehovah, both released in 2011, reaffirming his continued presence in Nigeria’s evolving music industry.
Throughout his career, Daddy Showkey has remained a respected figure whose influence extends beyond his recordings.
His contribution to street music culture, youth entertainment and indigenous dance movements helped shape an important era in Nigerian music history and inspired many younger artistes who followed in his footsteps.
The upcoming anniversary celebrations are therefore expected to serve not only as a personal milestone but also as an opportunity for fans and fellow entertainers to celebrate one of the country’s enduring musical icons.
With performances planned in both the community where his journey began and one of Lagos’ most prestigious venues, Daddy Showkey’s week-long celebration promises to honour a remarkable career that has spanned five decades while recognising the lasting impact he has made on Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
