Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Adebayo Salami, widely known as Oga Bello, has opened up about one of the most painful moments of his career, revealing that he once considered quitting acting after the death of his mentor, Ojo "Baba Mero" Ladipo.

Speaking during an interview on Feel Right News TV, the respected actor recalled how the loss of Baba Mero, followed years later by the death of the theatre icon's wife, became an emotionally challenging period that nearly brought his decades-long career to an end.

According to Salami, the difficult experience was made worse by allegations and negative comments directed at him following the deaths of the couple.

Although he chose not to disclose the details or those responsible for the accusations, he admitted that the criticism became overwhelming and left him questioning whether he still had a place in the theatre industry.

Baba Mero was one of the founding figures of Yoruba travelling theatre and comedy, establishing a theatre group that later became one of the most influential platforms for stage performances in Nigeria.

After his mentor's passing, Salami assumed leadership of the theatre troupe, a responsibility that came with significant challenges.

Reflecting on that period, Salami described it as the saddest chapter of his life. He explained that coping with the grief of losing his mentor while dealing with persistent accusations pushed him to the point of deciding to abandon acting altogether.

However, his decision changed after legendary theatre icon Hubert Ogunde stepped in with timely words of encouragement.

Salami revealed that Ogunde invited him for a conversation after hearing about his intention to leave the profession.

During their meeting, the veteran actor reminded him that great success often comes with difficult trials and urged him not to allow temporary challenges to end his journey in theatre.

The advice proved life-changing. Encouraged by Ogunde's support and prayers, Salami reconsidered his decision and chose to continue acting, a move that ultimately shaped the remarkable career he enjoys today.

The actor also addressed the long-standing belief that he influenced his son, Femi Adebayo, to pursue acting. Salami clarified that his son developed a passion for entertainment on his own despite studying law and qualifying as a legal practitioner.

He explained that Femi had already begun acting before university and later balanced both professions, choosing to follow his passion while maintaining his legal qualification.

Having begun his acting career in 1964, Adebayo Salami has grown into one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nollywood.

His body of work spans several decades and includes acclaimed productions such as Anikulapo, Seven Doors, Crossroads, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, and the 2025 family film Her Excellency. His story serves as a reminder that perseverance, mentorship, and resilience can help overcome even the most difficult moments in a successful career.
