Nigerian rapper Illbliss has urged citizens to embrace unity and reject growing tribal sentiments in the country, stressing that migrants from different ethnic backgrounds play a major role in sustaining local economies, especially in Lagos.
The ‘Aiye Po Gan’ crooner made the remarks during a recent appearance on the Outside The Box podcast, where he spoke extensively about ethnicity, inclusion, and the economic contributions of non-indigenes across Nigeria.
Illbliss specifically pointed to the Igbo community as a major force in Lagos’ commercial landscape, noting that their involvement in trade, retail, and entrepreneurship has significantly boosted the state’s economy over the years.
According to him, it is difficult to imagine the scale of economic activity in Lagos without the presence and contribution of Igbo traders and business owners who operate across various sectors.
He argued that migrants, regardless of their ethnic background, have always played important roles in shaping the growth and development of cities far from their ancestral homes.
The rapper expressed concern over increasing sentiments of exclusion in some parts of the country, where non-indigenes are sometimes told they do not belong or should return to their home states.
He described such attitudes as harmful to national development, warning that economic progress cannot thrive in an environment divided by ethnicity or origin.
Illbliss said, “The Igbos have contributed a lot to the Lagos economy in terms of trade and commerce. I wonder how this place would be if you told every Igbo man to leave. So I’m always shocked when I hear things like, ‘If you’re not from Lagos State, go back to your state.’”
He emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity should be seen as a strength rather than a source of division, adding that cooperation among different ethnic groups remains essential for long-term national stability.
According to him, many of the country’s challenges are worsened by persistent tribal and religious divisions that continue to influence public perception and social interactions.
Illbliss lamented that despite decades of coexistence, Nigerians are still often divided along ethnic lines, which he believes undermines collective progress.
He noted that in a country as diverse as Nigeria, migration between states and regions is natural and should be encouraged rather than discouraged.
The rapper also reflected on the broader implications of division, suggesting that Nigeria’s internal tensions sometimes raise questions about national unity and identity.
However, he maintained that the focus should not be on separation but on building systems that allow every citizen, regardless of origin, to thrive anywhere in the country.
He called for greater understanding among Nigerians, urging citizens to appreciate the contributions of others rather than judge them based on ethnicity.
Illbliss added that economic growth in cities like Lagos is a product of collaboration among people from different parts of the country, not the effort of a single group.
His comments have since sparked conversations online, with many agreeing with his stance on unity while others debated the role of ethnicity in Nigeria’s socio-economic structure.
Nevertheless, the rapper’s message continues to highlight ongoing discussions around inclusion, national identity, and the importance of maintaining peaceful coexistence in Nigeria’s diverse society.
