Popular Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has appealed to Nigerians to stop ridiculing celebrities, stressing that public figures deserve empathy rather than constant criticism.
Speaking during a recent interview, the actor expressed concern over the growing culture of mocking entertainers and other famous personalities on social media.
According to him, many people are quick to judge celebrities without having any understanding of the challenges that come with living in the public eye.
Deyemi noted that fame often comes with enormous pressure, scrutiny, and expectations that many outsiders never get to see. He argued that while celebrities may appear successful or glamorous, they also face personal struggles and emotional burdens like everyone else.
The actor also addressed the widespread use of the word "yeyebrities," a slang term commonly used online to mock celebrities. He described the nickname as unnecessary and disrespectful, adding that putting others down does not elevate anyone.
According to him, people who constantly belittle the achievements of public figures may unknowingly be limiting themselves through such negative attitudes.
Deyemi said, “I see people who have no idea what the challenge is that people in the spotlight are facing. They just come up with a lot of things. It’s sad to see. People even call celebrities ‘yeyebrities’ because I’m like, whatever you diminish in somebody else’s life, you can never achieve.”
He went on to caution those who enjoy mocking famous individuals, pointing out that no one can predict what the future holds. The actor said it is possible that someone within their own family could one day become a public figure and be exposed to the same type of criticism they currently dish out to others.
Continuing, he said, “So, let’s just pray that in your lineage, nobody finds their way into the spotlight, because if that happens, then you’ve opened up the door for such things to be said about them.”
His remarks have since generated conversations online, with many agreeing that celebrities should not be treated as though they are immune to emotional pain simply because of their status. Others argued that while public figures should expect criticism, there is a clear difference between constructive feedback and outright insults or ridicule.
Deyemi's message serves as a reminder that fame does not erase humanity. Behind the cameras, red carpets, and social media posts are individuals with feelings, families, and personal battles.
His appeal encourages Nigerians to replace mockery with understanding and to remember that kindness costs nothing, whether directed at celebrities or ordinary people.
