Veteran Nigerian singer and songwriter Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has responded strongly to online criticism after a fan suggested that he should retire from music due to his age.

The comment came shortly after the release of his latest music project, where the singer was seen performing energetic dance routines in the accompanying video.

While the clip attracted praise from fans, it also sparked debate on social media, with some users arguing that Afrobeats is increasingly becoming a genre for younger artists.

Reacting to the backlash, Mr P dismissed the criticism and defended his continued presence in the music industry.

He highlighted his versatility as an entertainer, noting that he is not only a singer but also a performer, dancer, and multi-instrumentalist with years of professional experience in the music scene.

Taking to his official social media page, the former PSquare member called for respect for his name and legacy, insisting that his contributions to the industry should not be undermined.

“Put some respect on the name Peter Okoye aka Mr P,” he wrote, making it clear that he remains fully committed to his craft despite public opinion.

He further suggested that many of the negative comments stem from fans who are still struggling to accept the split of the iconic music duo PSquare, which he formed with his twin brother, Paul Okoye.

According to him, such individuals have not moved on from the group’s breakup and are allowing that sentiment to influence their perception of his solo career.

Mr P also defended his decision to pursue a solo path, describing it as one of the best decisions of his life. He maintained that his career has continued to grow independently, with new opportunities and international recognition.

In addition, the singer revealed that he recently secured a major multi-million-dollar deal with a foreign distribution company.

The agreement, according to him, will cover three albums over a five-year period, marking a significant milestone in his solo journey.

He expressed confidence in his current direction, stating that no amount of criticism would derail his progress in the music industry.

“Nobody can stop this movement. The train has left the station. It’s Mr P forever,” he declared.

The statement has since generated mixed reactions online, with supporters praising his resilience and critics continuing to debate the longevity of older artists in the evolving Afrobeats scene.
