The Nigerian film industry was thrown into mourning on Thursday as family, friends, and colleagues gathered in Arochukwu, Abia State, for the final burial rites of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, bringing an emotional close to a journey that has deeply affected fans and industry stakeholders.

The 40-year-old actor passed away on May 11, 2026, after a prolonged battle with metastatic kidney cancer, a development that shocked the entertainment community and sparked an outpouring of tributes across social media and film circles.

His funeral ceremony drew a large crowd of sympathisers, with both formal and traditional rites held in honour of his life and career. The day’s activities began with a funeral service and reception at the Mary Slessor School Field in Amanagwu Village, where mourners gathered to pay their last respects.

From there, the procession moved in an emotional convoy to his family residence in Arochukwu, where he was finally laid to rest according to family traditions and arrangements.

Videos circulating online captured heartbreaking scenes as the actor’s casket arrived at the venue. Family members were seen visibly emotional, while colleagues from the film industry stood in solidarity, reflecting on the life and legacy of a man many described as talented, humble, and impactful.

Among those present were several prominent Nollywood figures including IK Ogbonna, Mike Godson, AY Makun, Ini Edo, Nancy Isime, Bimbo Ademoye, as well as businessman Obi Cubana. Their presence underscored the strong relationships Alex Ekubo built within and beyond the entertainment industry during his lifetime.

Earlier funeral activities had already begun in Lagos, where a service of songs was held on June 10. The Lagos event featured emotional tributes from friends, colleagues, and family members who shared personal memories and reflected on his contributions to Nollywood.

The mourning period continued with a wake-keep held on Wednesday, June 17, at the family residence on Ekubo-Okwaraeke Avenue in Aziukwukwa Ujari Village. The event served as a final night of remembrance before the burial, bringing together extended family members, community leaders, and close associates.

Throughout the ceremonies, speakers highlighted Alex Ekubo’s journey in the Nigerian entertainment industry, where he earned recognition for his versatility, charisma, and ability to portray a wide range of characters across romantic and dramatic roles.

Many attendees described the atmosphere as both solemn and celebratory, noting that while his passing is a painful loss, his legacy in Nollywood will continue to live on through his body of work and the impact he made on colleagues and fans.

Alex Ekubo rose to prominence over the years as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, starring in numerous films and building a strong fan base across Africa and beyond.

As the final rites concluded in Abia State, prayers were offered for the repose of his soul, while family members expressed gratitude to all who supported them during the difficult period.

The emotional farewell marks the end of a significant chapter for Nollywood, as colleagues continue to reflect on the life of a star whose journey was cut short but whose influence remains firmly etched in the industry’s history.
