The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has confirmed that Nollywood actor Benedict Johnson is currently undergoing medical treatment and will require surgery for an undisclosed health condition.
The announcement followed growing public concern after a video surfaced online showing the veteran actor inside an MRI scanning machine, which sparked widespread speculation about his health.
Addressing the situation, AGN President Abubakar Yakubu stated that the guild is fully aware of Johnson’s condition and is providing support to ensure he receives proper medical care.
According to Yakubu, the actor is indeed ill and in need of surgery, adding that the guild is standing by him during this critical period. He emphasized that the industry body is committed to assisting one of its members through treatment and recovery.
Benedict Johnson, who studied Mass Communication at Abia State University, Uturu, began his journey in entertainment as a musician in the late 1980s before transitioning into acting.
He later became part of Nollywood’s early development phase, featuring in classic productions that helped shape the industry.
One of his earliest screen appearances was in Living in Bondage, a landmark film widely credited with laying the foundation for modern Nollywood cinema.
He also featured in other notable productions, including Stolen Bible, further establishing his presence in the industry.
The current health challenge comes months after Johnson opened up about a difficult phase in his career, revealing that he went several years without receiving acting roles.
The actor had previously spoken about how he was not contacted for film jobs for about five years, a period that affected his professional journey significantly.
During that time, he reportedly relocated to Abuja in search of spiritual guidance and renewed direction, attending prayer programmes despite skepticism from colleagues about his decision.
His return to the screen in 2026, however, marked a major turnaround in his career, as he later revealed that he had secured multiple acting roles both locally and internationally.
Fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry have continued to express concern and send prayers for his quick recovery, as the news of his illness circulates widely on social media.
While details of the surgery have not been disclosed, the AGN has assured that it will continue to support the actor throughout his treatment and recovery process, reinforcing its commitment to the welfare of its members in times of need.
