Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has opened up on why she is frequently cast in villainous roles, explaining that her performances are deliberate and aimed at reflecting real-life societal issues.

The award-winning actress spoke during a recent interview, where she discussed her acting philosophy, her career choices, and the message behind the characters she portrays in films. According to her, acting is more than entertainment, as it also serves as a mirror of society.

Mama G noted that many of the stories told in Nollywood are inspired by real-life experiences, adding that her decision to consistently take on “wicked” or antagonistic roles is rooted in her desire to expose moral wrongdoing and social vices.

She explained that while some actors prefer heroic or sympathetic characters, she finds fulfilment in playing roles that challenge viewers and spark reflection about behaviour in society.

According to her, many of the actions portrayed in films—betrayal, jealousy, manipulation, and greed—are not fictional inventions but realities that exist in everyday life. She stressed that cinema becomes powerful when it does not shy away from uncomfortable truths.

“I felt bold to expose the ills of society. These things happen and nobody wants to expose them, so I’m exposing them. So I’m extremely proud of myself and Mama G lovers,” she said.

Ozokwor added that her roles are not meant to promote negativity but to highlight consequences and teach lessons. She explained that audiences often learn more from characters who display negative behaviour than those who appear perfect, because such stories show what should be avoided in real life.

Over the years, Mama G has become one of the most recognisable faces in Nollywood, particularly for her strong, emotional, and often intimidating performances in family dramas and moral-themed films. Her ability to convincingly embody villainous characters has made her both feared and admired by audiences across Nigeria and beyond.

Despite being typecast in such roles, the actress said she has never regretted her career path, adding that she embraces the impact her characters have had on storytelling in the Nigerian film industry.

She further explained that acting requires commitment and understanding of human behaviour, and that she draws inspiration from observing real-life situations around her.

According to her, the entertainment industry has a responsibility to educate as well as entertain, and actors play a key role in shaping public perception through the stories they bring to life on screen.

Mama G’s comments have once again sparked conversations among fans, many of whom praised her consistency and long-standing contribution to Nollywood. Others noted that her performances have helped define the “villain archetype” in Nigerian cinema.

The actress, who has spent decades in the industry, remains one of Nollywood’s most iconic performers, with a legacy built on versatility, emotional depth, and unforgettable screen presence.

She concluded by reaffirming her passion for acting and her commitment to roles that carry strong messages, insisting that she remains proud of the characters she has brought to life over the years.
