Late Nollywood comic actor Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, has been recognised posthumously at the Humour Awards held in Lagos, in celebration of his lasting impact on Nigerian entertainment and comedy.
The event took place on Sunday at the Eko Convention Centre, located within the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island.
It brought together a wide range of entertainers including comedians, skit makers, content creators and industry stakeholders, all gathered to celebrate excellence in humour and digital creativity across Africa.
This year’s edition of the awards carried the theme “Create Your Chance,” highlighting the growing influence of comedy and online content creation as major forces in the African entertainment industry.
The ceremony featured live performances, award presentations and appearances from both established names and rising talents.
Organisers later confirmed via their official social media page that Baba Suwe was among the recipients of a posthumous honour.
The announcement placed him alongside another late entertainer, Uche Ogbuagwu, both recognised for their contributions to the growth of comedy and film in Nigeria.
The recognition has been widely seen as a tribute to Baba Suwe’s legacy, especially his decades-long career in Yoruba-language films where he became one of the most beloved comic figures of his generation.
Known for his unique humour and expressive acting style, he remained a household name even years after his peak in the industry.
Alongside the posthumous awards, several living entertainers were also celebrated for their contributions to comedy and digital content creation.
The list of honourees included popular figures such as Yaw, Peller, Dezny, MC Edo Pikin and Taaooma, all of whom have played significant roles in shaping modern Nigerian comedy.
The Humour Awards continues to position itself as one of the platforms recognising both traditional comedians and new-generation digital creators, bridging the gap between stage comedy, film, and online skits.
Speaking through the ceremony’s theme, organisers emphasised the importance of creativity and consistency in building a successful career in entertainment.
They noted that the Nigerian comedy industry has evolved significantly, with social media now playing a major role in shaping careers and expanding audiences.
Baba Suwe’s recognition at the event has sparked emotional reactions among fans who still remember his classic performances in Nollywood comedy films.
Many described the honour as a fitting reminder of his influence and the joy he brought to millions of viewers during his lifetime.
Although he is no longer alive, his legacy continues to live on through his work, which remains popular among both older and younger audiences.
The posthumous award serves as a symbolic gesture of appreciation for his contribution to the foundation of modern Nigerian comedy.
The 2026 Humour Awards once again highlighted the importance of celebrating entertainers who have shaped the industry, ensuring that both past legends and present stars receive recognition for their roles in the growth of African entertainment.
