As conversations around Nigeria’s 2027 general election continue to gather momentum, the Presiding Pastor of Salvation Ministries, David Ibiyeomie, has urged citizens to make decisions based on competence, character and integrity rather than financial inducements or party loyalty.

Addressing worshippers during a church service on Sunday, the cleric spoke extensively on the importance of responsible voting, warning that accepting money in exchange for votes could have long-term consequences for both individuals and the nation.

According to him, temporary financial rewards offered during elections often pale in comparison to the impact of poor leadership over several years. He reminded Nigerians that elected officials make decisions that affect the economy, security, infrastructure and overall quality of life long after election day has passed.

“If any of you collect money to go and vote, and are saying it’s money I will chop? The money you get before is only for one week. What are the rest of the four years? Never sell your conscience for money.”

Ibiyeomie stressed that citizens have a responsibility to carefully evaluate those seeking public office. Rather than casting ballots solely based on political affiliations, he encouraged voters to focus on the track records, abilities and vision of candidates.

“Don’t vote party, vote who can deliver.”

The pastor noted that the future of the country depends largely on the quality of leadership entrusted with public office. He urged Nigerians to look beyond campaign promises and assess whether candidates possess the capacity and commitment needed to address the nation's challenges.

Speaking further, Ibiyeomie emphasized the strength of collective action, stating that citizens should never underestimate the influence they wield when united in a common cause. He said meaningful change becomes possible when people refuse to remain silent in the face of injustice or poor governance.

According to him, the voice of the people remains one of the most powerful forces in any society, particularly when citizens are determined to defend what is right.

“When masses say no, nobody stands.”

He encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast in promoting truth, fairness and accountability at every level of society. The cleric added that lasting progress can only be achieved when citizens actively participate in shaping the direction of their communities and the nation as a whole.

Ibiyeomie also turned his attention to members of the judiciary, calling on them to uphold the principles of justice and integrity in the discharge of their duties. He urged judicial officers to remain committed to fairness and leave behind legacies that would be remembered positively by future generations.

The pastor maintained that institutions play a critical role in strengthening democracy and ensuring that public confidence in governance is preserved. He therefore appealed to those occupying positions of authority to act with honesty and a sense of responsibility.

In addition, he expressed concern over situations where religious leaders openly align themselves with politicians despite doubts about their competence or commitment to good governance. According to him, spiritual leaders should be guided by principles and conscience rather than personal interests or political considerations.

“Don’t pray for a man who cannot deliver. Pray for somebody who has conscience.”

His remarks come at a time when discussions about leadership, accountability and voter responsibility are increasingly taking centre stage ahead of the next electoral cycle. Through his message, Ibiyeomie urged Nigerians to place greater value on integrity, performance and the collective good when making decisions that will shape the country's future.
