Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has spoken about the long and challenging journey she faced before achieving financial success in the Nigerian film industry.

In a recent reflection, the popular star revealed that although she joined Nollywood in 2001, it took her several years before she began earning meaningful income from acting.

According to her, the early years of her career were marked by financial struggle, as actors were often underpaid and had to accept very low fees simply to stay active in the industry.

“I just started making money 8 years ago, and I’ve been in the film industry since 2001. Back then, we acted and got peanuts, but we did it just to survive,” she said.

Her statement sheds light on the difficult realities faced by many early Nollywood practitioners, who worked long hours on film sets with little financial reward. Despite the challenges, many of them remained committed, driven by passion and the hope of better opportunities in the future.

Born Olutoyin Aimakhu, she began her acting career in Yoruba-language films after being introduced to the industry by veteran actress Bukky Wright. From those humble beginnings, she gradually built her profile through consistent roles and dedication to her craft.

Her major breakthrough came with the popular Alakada film series, which helped establish her as a household name and opened doors to bigger opportunities in mainstream Nollywood productions.

Over the years, Toyin Abraham has evolved into one of the most successful figures in the industry, both as an actress and a producer.

She has featured in and produced several commercially successful films including The Ghost and the Tout, Fate of Alakada, Ijakumo, Malaika, Oversabi Aunty, and Alakada: Bad and Boujee.

Her rise in the late 2010s marked a turning point in her career, as she became one of Nollywood’s most consistent box office performers, contributing significantly to the growth of contemporary Nigerian cinema.

Today, her story is often cited as an example of perseverance in Nollywood, highlighting how patience and dedication can eventually lead to long-term success despite early financial hardship.
