Veteran Nollywood actor Keppy Ekpenyong has shared details of a frightening health challenge that left him unconscious for two days, revealing how intense work schedules and poor self-care contributed to a diabetic coma in 2022.
The respected actor made the revelation during a special event held in his honour at Ojez Lounge in Surulere, Lagos.
The gathering, organised by the Ojez Entertainment Forum, brought together actors, filmmakers, entertainers and industry stakeholders who came to celebrate his remarkable contributions to the Nigerian movie industry.
Speaking during the occasion, Ekpenyong explained that his health crisis developed after a prolonged period of work-related stress.
According to him, he had been constantly engaged in projects without giving himself enough time to rest or maintain healthy eating habits.
The actor disclosed that the combination of inadequate sleep, poor nutrition and mounting pressure eventually affected his health.
He said the situation escalated when his blood pressure rose sharply, leading to a diabetic coma that lasted for two days. Fortunately, he was able to recover and return to normal life after receiving medical attention.
Despite the traumatic experience, Ekpenyong expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal and continuing his career.
He also used the opportunity to encourage people to prioritize their health, especially those working in demanding professions.
The event was themed “Celebrating the Living Rather Than the Dead,” a concept the actor strongly supported. He praised the organisers for choosing to honour individuals while they are alive to appreciate the recognition.
According to him, many people receive praise only after they have passed away, making initiatives that celebrate achievements during a person's lifetime particularly meaningful. He noted that showing appreciation while people can still witness and enjoy it is far more valuable.
Among those who attended the ceremony were notable figures in the entertainment industry, including Segun Arinze, Femi Durojaiye, Shaibu Husseini, Emeka Osai, Effiong Idowu and several other practitioners.
Durojaiye paid tribute to the actor during the event, recalling a friendship that stretches back to their secondary school years. He described Ekpenyong as both a friend and a senior colleague whose journey in the industry has inspired many younger actors.
Ekpenyong remains one of the most recognisable faces in Nigerian cinema. He first gained widespread popularity through the television drama series Ripples before becoming a household name during the home-video boom of the 1990s.
Over the years, he has featured in acclaimed productions such as Glamour Girls, 93 Days, Blood Sisters, King of Boys: The Return of the King and Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. His enduring impact on Nollywood continues to earn him admiration from colleagues and fans alike.
