Actor IK Ogbonna became emotional on Wednesday as he paid a heartfelt tribute to his close friend and colleague, Alexx Ekubo, during a service of songs held in Lagos.
The solemn event, which took place at Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, marked the beginning of the final funeral activities for the Nollywood star, who passed away on May 11 at the age of 40 after a brief illness.
Family members, friends, and several figures from the Nigerian film industry gathered to honour the late actor’s life and legacy.
The atmosphere was filled with grief as speakers took turns to remember the impact Alexx had on their lives both personally and professionally.
Among the most emotional moments of the evening was IK Ogbonna’s tribute. Fighting back tears, he described Alexx as more than just a friend, stressing that their bond was closer than brotherhood.
He recalled the everyday moments they shared, saying the reality of Alexx’s passing still felt unreal. According to him, he often finds himself reaching for his phone to send messages, jokes, or memes to the late actor, only to be reminded that those conversations will never happen again.
The actor admitted he struggles to accept the loss, expressing deep pain over the absence of someone he considered family. He questioned how he would ever come to terms with such a void in his life.
Despite his grief, IK also reflected on the positive memories they shared over the years. He noted that their friendship was filled with laughter, disagreements, reconciliation, and mutual support. He also mentioned that Alexx often encouraged him to maintain a stronger spiritual connection.
Looking upward during his speech, IK promised to continue honouring the values and responsibilities his late friend cared about.
He spoke with emotion about how Alexx’s personality brought life and energy into every space he entered, describing him as someone who naturally uplifted those around him.
Other Nollywood colleagues present at the service also paid tribute, including actors and entertainers who shared personal stories and memories of their time with Alexx. Many attendees were visibly moved, with some unable to hold back tears.
Guests at the ceremony were dressed in white as requested by the family, creating a calm and unified atmosphere for the tribute. Prominent names in attendance included industry veterans and contemporary stars who came together to celebrate the life of the late actor.
Following the service of songs, the family announced plans for the remaining burial arrangements. A wake is scheduled to take place on June 17 at the family home in Arochukwu, Abia State, while the funeral service and interment will follow on June 18.
Alexx Ekubo’s passing, which was confirmed by his family on May 12, was attributed to complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer after a short battle with the illness. His death has continued to send shockwaves through the entertainment industry.
The late actor rose to fame after finishing as first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition. He later built a successful acting career, becoming one of Nollywood’s most recognisable and admired figures through his performances in several films and television productions.
