Nigerian content creator and streamer Carter Efe has shared what he says is his Babcock University degree certificate as conversations continue over rapper Ycee's "Olodo uprising" statement, which criticized the growing disregard for education and referenced streamer Peller.
Carter Efe appeared to distance himself from the criticism by posting a copy of his university certificate and speaking about his academic background.
According to the streamer, he studied Biochemistry at Babcock University, graduated with a First Class and finished as the best graduating student in his set.
"I went to Babcock University. I study Bio chemistry. I came out with first class upper….. Best student in my set," he wrote.
While the post was intended to establish his academic credentials, it also sparked fresh questions about the wording of his claim.
Several people pointed out that Nigerian universities do not award a degree classification known as "First Class Upper." Instead, the highest undergraduate classification is First Class Honours, while Second Class is divided into Upper and Lower divisions.
The use of the phrase "First Class Upper" led some to question whether the certificate Carter Efe shared was genuine. Others urged him to provide additional proof of his academic record by sharing photographs or videos from his graduation ceremony.
The development comes after Ycee, during an appearance on the Afropolitan Podcast, spoke about what he described as an "Olodo uprising." In the interview, the rapper said academic excellence is no longer receiving the recognition it once did and referenced Peller while making his point. His comments quickly became a topic of discussion, with many weighing in on the place of education in today's entertainment industry.
Although Ycee's comments were largely directed at Peller, Carter Efe's decision to share his certificate has been widely viewed as an effort to make it clear that he should not be grouped with those being criticized over educational qualifications.
As reactions to his post continued, many maintained that the main issue was not whether he attended Babcock University, but his description of graduating with a "First Class Upper" a classification that does not officially exist in Nigerian universities.
Carter Efe has not responded to the questions surrounding the certificate or the wording of his academic qualification if its genuine or not.
