Femi Branch remains one of the most respected and enduring figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Known for his commanding screen presence and ability to adapt seamlessly across roles, he has built a career that spans over thirty years in both English and Yoruba Nollywood.
Born David Babafemi Mauton Osunkoya, the actor, playwright, poet, director, and producer has become widely recognised as a multi-talented creative whose influence cuts across stage, television, and film.
His early life laid a strong foundation for his artistic journey. Born on May 14, 1970, in Sagamu, Ogun State, Femi Branch was raised in a family of educators, a background that helped shape his discipline and intellectual approach to storytelling.
He attended Airforce Secondary School in Ikeja, Lagos, where he completed his secondary education before gaining admission into Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
Initially enrolled to study Religious Studies, Branch later followed his passion and made a decisive shift to the Department of Dramatic Arts. This decision proved pivotal in shaping his future.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and immediately began developing his craft in performance and stage production.
His acting career started on the university stage in 1991, where he featured in the Yoruba stage play Eniyan. He also appeared in the campus film production Orisun, gaining early experience in storytelling and performance.
However, his rise to mainstream recognition came years later. In 2003, he appeared in a widely popular MTN television commercial titled “Dance with Me,” which brought him into the public eye.
His breakthrough followed shortly after when he played the role of “Oscar” in the hit TV soap opera Domino. His portrayal of a complex and often ruthless character earned him widespread acclaim and established him as a powerful on-screen talent.
Beyond television and film, Femi Branch has remained deeply connected to theatre. He has written, produced, and directed several stage productions, including Queen Moremi the Musical and Man Talk Woman Talk.
His contributions to literature also stand out, particularly his published work From Senbora, a 409-page collection that features fifty poems and three plays. His creative output reflects a deep commitment to storytelling in multiple forms.
Over the years, Branch has featured in several major productions across different platforms. His filmography includes titles such as A Place in the Stars, The Black Book, House of Ga’a, Farmer’s Bride, Far From Home, and Ijogbon.
These roles have showcased his versatility, allowing him to move effortlessly between historical dramas, contemporary thrillers, and streaming platform originals.
In addition to his artistic achievements, Femi Branch has also been honoured culturally and politically. He was conferred with the chieftaincy title of Jagun Asa of Edeland by the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, in recognition of his contributions to Yoruba culture and the arts.
He also ventured into politics, contesting as a deputy gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State during the 2023 general elections, further demonstrating his interest in public service.
On a personal level, the actor is known for his intentional identity choices. Born into the Osunkoya family, he later changed his surname to “Branch,” a decision he has explained in interviews as a personal and spiritual choice rooted in his beliefs.
Despite occasional online claims about his wealth, Femi Branch has clarified that exaggerated figures circulating on the internet are inaccurate.
His estimated net worth is believed to be between $300,000 and $500,000, reflecting his steady work in film, theatre, and creative production.
Today, Femi Branch continues to stand as a respected voice in Nollywood, admired for his consistency, depth, and dedication to the craft of acting.
