Veteran Nollywood actress Clarion Chukwurah has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late theatre icon Kola Oyewo, reflecting on the deep impact he had on her life and career during her early years in the entertainment industry.
Taking to her Instagram page, the award-winning actress shared fond memories of the late academic and performer, describing him not only as a respected colleague but also as one of the key figures who helped shape her foundation in dramatic arts.
According to her, Kola Oyewo first came into her life as a lecturer while she studied Dramatic Arts at what was then the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University. She revealed that he taught her Theatre Management, a course that exposed her to the discipline and structure behind stage and film production.
Chukwurah noted that beyond the classroom experience, their relationship evolved over the years into a professional collaboration, as both later worked together on several stage plays and film productions that celebrated Nigerian history and culture.
She explained that working with Oyewo outside the academic environment gave her a deeper appreciation of his versatility and commitment to the arts. Over time, he became more than a teacher to her, but a mentor whose influence continued to reflect in her career choices and artistic development.
In her emotional message, the actress expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have learned under his guidance and later shared the screen and stage with him on multiple projects. She specifically mentioned productions such as ODUDUWA and other traditional and historical performances where they both contributed to storytelling rooted in Yoruba heritage and Nigerian culture.
She described the late actor as a “quintessential performer across three generations,” noting that his contribution to theatre, television, and film extended beyond his immediate students and colleagues. According to her, Oyewo’s legacy remains evident in the many actors and creatives he mentored throughout his decades-long career.
Chukwurah also praised his discipline, professionalism, and passion for preserving indigenous storytelling, adding that his influence would continue to be felt in Nollywood and the wider theatre community for years to come.
She concluded her tribute with a farewell message, expressing sorrow over his passing while also celebrating the life he lived and the impact he made. She prayed for him to rest peacefully, acknowledging that his legacy would remain an important part of Nigerian theatre history.
The tribute has since drawn reactions from fans and colleagues, many of whom joined her in honouring the late theatre legend and recognising his contribution to the development of the Nigerian film and stage industry.
