Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has publicly accused a Lagos-based private hospital of deliberately frustrating efforts to uncover what happened to her 21-month-old son, saying her family’s search for answers has been met with delays and resistance.

The acclaimed writer made the allegations while releasing details of a letter she had earlier sent to the leadership of Euracare Hospital, where her son, Nkanu, died in January following medical complications during preparatory procedures. In the emotional correspondence, Adichie described the hospital’s conduct as deeply painful and accused it of turning an already devastating experience into a prolonged struggle for accountability.

According to Adichie, her son passed away on January 7, 2026, after undergoing medical procedures ahead of a planned transfer abroad for specialised treatment. The tragedy sparked widespread attention and later led to legal action and a formal request for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding his death.

In her latest comments, Adichie alleged that what began as a painful effort to understand the events surrounding her son’s death has gradually become complicated by procedural delays and legal challenges.

She released a letter dated April 16 and addressed to the hospital’s board chairman, in which she accused the institution of engaging in conduct designed to obstruct progress in the case.

Describing the process as emotionally exhausting, Adichie said the loss of her child had already left her family devastated and that the continued legal and procedural setbacks had made grieving even more difficult.

“I long for, at least, peace to mourn,” she said while insisting that remaining silent would amount to accepting conduct she believes deserves scrutiny.

Her family had earlier initiated legal proceedings alleging that medical negligence and professional misconduct contributed to the child’s death. Those claims have been denied by the hospital, which has maintained that medical care provided complied with accepted standards and has challenged aspects of the process surrounding the inquest.

A coroner’s inquest was subsequently opened by the Lagos State Judiciary to examine the circumstances surrounding the death. Proceedings began earlier in the year but later encountered setbacks after legal objections were raised.

Earlier this month, a Lagos High Court ordered a temporary suspension of the inquest following an application filed by Euracare questioning aspects of the process and jurisdiction. The matter was later adjourned until October pending further legal review.

In the published letter, Adichie also raised concerns about what she described as inconsistencies in medical documentation and the conduct of certain individuals involved in her son’s treatment. She alleged that conversations held with hospital representatives after the incident left her with more questions than answers.

Among her concerns were claims relating to medication administration, record-keeping and communication after the child’s death. She further questioned the completeness of information made available to her family during their attempts to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Those allegations remain contested and have not been determined by any court.

The case has drawn national and international attention, not only because of Adichie’s global profile but also because it has reignited broader conversations around patient safety, transparency in healthcare, and medical accountability in Nigeria.

For now, the legal process remains ongoing, while Adichie insists her family will continue pursuing what she describes as truth and justice for their son.
