Nollywood actress Blessing Obasi has opened up about the reactions she received after portraying a lesbian inmate in the second season of the popular series Blood Sisters.

The actress revealed that while many viewers praised her performance, some Christians expressed disappointment and questioned why she accepted such a role.

Speaking during a recent interview on Yanga FM, Obasi explained that acting is a profession that requires performers to take on a wide range of characters, regardless of whether they personally identify with the lifestyles or beliefs of those characters. According to her, the responsibility of an actor is to bring stories to life as authentically as possible.

The actress stressed that the storyline in Blood Sisters 2 was inspired by realities that exist in society and was not created to promote or endorse any particular lifestyle. She noted that the role reflected situations that occur in prison environments and was included as part of a broader narrative.

Obasi said some critics felt uncomfortable seeing someone who openly identifies as a Christian take on such a character. However, she maintained that portraying a role on screen should not be confused with an actor's personal convictions.

According to her, filmmakers often draw inspiration from real-life events, and actors are tasked with helping audiences understand those stories.

She added that removing difficult or controversial topics from films would limit the industry's ability to reflect society honestly.

The actress further explained that the producers of the series handled the sensitive subject matter carefully.

She said the scenes were approached with caution and were not designed to glorify the behaviour being depicted. Instead, the intention was to tell a realistic story while maintaining a level of responsibility in the presentation.

Despite the criticism, Obasi said she has chosen not to dwell on negative comments. Rather than focusing on disapproval, she pays attention to the encouragement and support she receives from fans and viewers who appreciate her work.

She described the positive feedback as overwhelming and said it serves as motivation to continue growing in her career. For her, constructive responses and appreciation from audiences carry more weight than online attacks.

The actress also reflected on the nature of social media criticism, suggesting that many people who leave harsh comments may be dealing with personal struggles of their own. Because of this, she prefers not to respond with anger or hostility.

Instead, Obasi said she chooses understanding and prayer whenever she encounters negativity. She believes that everyone faces challenges in life and that responding with kindness is often the better option.

Her comments have sparked discussions among fans, with many arguing that actors should not be judged based on the fictional characters they portray.

Others maintain that public figures have a responsibility to consider the messages their roles may send. Regardless of the differing opinions, Obasi remains firm in her belief that acting is about storytelling and bringing diverse characters to life on screen.
