Omowunmi Dada is steadily expanding her influence in Nollywood, moving beyond acting into a more strategic and creative role behind the camera. After more than a decade of notable screen performances, she is now stepping deeper into film production with her latest project, Evi, marking a new phase in her career journey.

Her transition is not sudden but rather a gradual evolution shaped by experience, exposure, and a growing desire for creative control.

Over the years, she has built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s most consistent performers, but her recent work shows a deliberate shift toward shaping the stories themselves rather than only interpreting them.

A key turning point in this journey is her involvement as an executive producer on Evi, directed by Uyoyou Adia.

The film also reunites her with collaborators such as Judith Audu, with whom she previously worked on The Sessions. In that earlier project, she already began exploring behind-the-scenes responsibilities as a co-executive producer, but Evi represents a stronger commitment to full-scale production leadership.

Speaking on her decision, Dada explained that her move into producing was driven by readiness rather than timing.

After years of observing how films are developed and executed, she felt compelled to become part of the decision-making process from the earliest stages.

This includes shaping narratives, influencing character development, and ensuring that stories reflect authentic perspectives, particularly those of Nigerian women.

Evi follows a deeply personal and emotional storyline centred on a woman navigating pride, failure, and self-discovery. The project aligns with Dada’s creative vision, focusing on human experiences that feel relatable while still offering strong cinematic value.

Her involvement is not limited to funding or credit; she actively contributed to discussions on tone, storytelling direction, and character depth.

One of the most important shifts for her has been the difference between acting and producing. As an actor, involvement typically begins after major creative decisions have been made.

However, as a producer, she now participates in early conversations that determine what stories are told, why they matter, and who they represent. This shift has given her a stronger sense of ownership and responsibility.

Dada also highlighted that producing allows her to challenge long-standing limitations in Nollywood, especially regarding the types of roles available to women.

By stepping into production, she gains the ability to help shape narratives that expand opportunities for female characters and introduce more diverse storytelling.

Her production company, Signet Ring Studios, serves as the foundation for her future projects. Through it, she intends to develop films that reflect Nigerian realities while also appealing to global audiences. Her focus is on meaningful storytelling that balances artistic depth with commercial potential.

She also acknowledged that producing comes with unexpected emotional weight. Unlike acting, where responsibility ends after filming, producing requires continuous engagement from development to release. This deeper involvement has made her more emotionally connected to her projects.

Looking ahead, she is already developing new ideas, though she remains selective about the projects she attaches herself to. Her goal is to ensure that every story aligns with her values and contributes positively to Nollywood’s evolving landscape.

Overall, Omowunmi Dada’s shift into producing reflects a broader trend in Nollywood where actors are becoming creators and decision-makers. Her journey signals not just personal growth, but also the gradual transformation of the Nigerian film industry into a more collaborative and artist-driven space.
