Idowu Phillips, popularly known as Iya Rainbow, remains one of the most respected and influential figures in Nigerian cinema, with a career spanning over six decades in both Yoruba theatre and Nollywood.
Her journey from healthcare professional to legendary actress has made her a symbol of resilience, talent, and cultural preservation in the entertainment industry.
Born on October 16, 1942, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, she grew up in a Christian home under the care of Prophet Jacob Adebanjo Ifemade and Mrs. Ifemade. She began her education at African Methodist School and later attended Anglican Modern School before proceeding to nursing school, where she trained as a healthcare worker.
Before becoming a full-time actress, she worked as a nurse for about 20 years. During this period, she was already involved part-time in theatre through her late husband’s drama group.
Her stage name, “Iya Rainbow,” was derived from “Osumare,” the name of her husband’s theatre troupe, which played a major role in shaping her artistic path.
Her transition into acting became more prominent after the death of her husband, Sir Hubert Ogunde, in 1990.
Following his passing, she took a more active role in Yoruba travelling theatre before fully embracing Nollywood productions. This marked the beginning of a remarkable second phase of her career.
Over the years, Iya Rainbow has featured in more than 500 films across both Yoruba and English-language cinema. Some of her notable works include Oga Bolaji, Sugar Rush, Becoming Abi, Madami, and Adire. Her ability to adapt across generations has kept her relevant in an ever-evolving industry.
She is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Yoruba theatre and a bridge between traditional stage performances and modern Nigerian filmmaking. In recognition of her contributions, she has received numerous awards, including the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
Beyond acting, she has served as a brand ambassador for several organisations and continues to be celebrated for her influence in entertainment and culture. Even in her 80s, she remains active in public appearances and selected film projects.
In her personal life, Iya Rainbow is a devoted mother of five children and a committed Christian. She has often spoken about her faith and her decision not to remarry after the death of her husband, choosing instead to focus on her family and career.
Her legacy continues to inspire younger generations of actors, making her one of the most enduring and respected figures in African cinema.
