Nigeria’s literary and theatre communities are preparing for a historic celebration as renowned playwright, poet, critic, and scholar Femi Osofisan marks his 80th birthday in June 2026.

The week-long festival, tagged FO@80, is scheduled to hold from June 11 to June 18 across Lagos and Ibadan, bringing together academics, actors, filmmakers, students, and lovers of African literature to honor one of the continent’s most influential cultural voices.

The celebration is expected to feature stage performances, film screenings, public lectures, panel discussions, and tributes dedicated to Osofisan’s extraordinary contribution to African theatre and literature.

For decades, the celebrated dramatist has remained one of the strongest voices using art to challenge injustice, oppression, corruption, and inequality within society.

Born on June 16, 1946, in Ogun State, Osofisan’s journey into literature began at the prestigious University of Ibadan, where he studied and later became an Emeritus Professor.

Throughout his illustrious career, he produced more than 40 plays alongside poetry collections, essays, and novellas that have shaped modern African storytelling.

His works are known for blending folklore, music, mythology, dance, and satire while addressing serious political and social issues affecting postcolonial Africa.

Unlike many writers who glorify elites and rulers, Osofisan’s storytelling often focuses on ordinary people and their struggles.

His dramas consistently examine themes such as abuse of power, class conflict, military dictatorship, gender inequality, and the need for social change. Through theatre, he created a platform for questioning authority and empowering the masses.

One of the major highlights of the FO@80 celebration will be performances of his famous play, Yungba Yungba and the Dance Contest.

The production is expected to open the festival with live performances at the Lagos State University of Education, while recorded screenings will also take place in Ibadan.

The play uses the setting of a traditional dance competition to explore themes of dictatorship, youth resistance, and the fight for democratic freedom. Despite being written years ago, the story remains relevant in today’s political climate.

Another iconic work closely associated with Osofisan is Morountodun, widely regarded as one of his greatest masterpieces.

The play draws inspiration from the ancient Yoruba myth of Moremi but reinterprets it through the historical Agbekoya peasant uprising of the 1960s in Western Nigeria.

In the story, Osofisan shifts attention away from royal heroism and instead highlights peasant resistance, women’s strength, and collective struggle against oppression.

His celebrated play Once Upon Four Robbers also stands as one of the boldest critiques of Nigerian society.

The drama examines armed robbery and state executions while challenging audiences to think deeply about poverty, injustice, and the social conditions that push individuals into crime.

By involving the audience in deciding the fate of the robbers, Osofisan transformed theatre into an active social conversation rather than mere entertainment.

Beyond theatre, Osofisan’s literary influence also extended into prose works such as Maami, a touching novella centered on the sacrifices of a struggling single mother.

The emotional story later gained international attention when veteran filmmaker Tunde Kelani adapted it into a successful feature film in 2011.

Another adaptation, Cordelia, will reportedly conclude the Lagos leg of the FO@80 celebration, further demonstrating how Osofisan’s stories continue to resonate across different generations and artistic formats.

Over the years, Osofisan has received numerous honors for his immense contribution to literature and theatre, including the Nigerian National Order of Merit and the prestigious Thalia Prize awarded by the International Association of Theatre Critics, making him the first African recipient of the award.

His influence extends far beyond Nigeria, as his works continue to be studied and performed in universities and theatres around the world.

As artists, scholars, and admirers gather to celebrate his 80th birthday, the FO@80 festival will serve as more than just a tribute to a literary icon.

It will also reaffirm the enduring power of storytelling as a tool for resistance, education, and societal transformation.

Through his words, plays, and vision, Femi Osofisan has built a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of writers, actors, and thinkers across Africa and beyond.
