Nigerian Afrobeats star Zlatan Ibile has expressed concern over the growing influence of social media personalities on the country’s music industry, warning that the trend is beginning to affect both the structure and quality of music production.
Speaking during an appearance on the Afrobeats podcast hosted by Shopsydoo, the rapper highlighted how the rise of influencer culture has significantly altered the traditional dynamics of fame and music creation in Nigeria.
According to Zlatan, the entertainment landscape has evolved to the point where music is no longer the exclusive domain of trained or professional artistes. Instead, content creators across platforms such as TikTok and Instagram are now stepping into the music space and achieving rapid success.
“It used to be that artists were the celebrities, but now TikTokers, influencers, and content creators are celebrities. That is why you can see an influencer or skit maker drop a song and it blows up,” he said.
The singer explained that this shift has blurred the lines between musicians and digital creators, with both groups now competing for attention and relevance within the same space. He noted that the popularity of influencers often gives them an advantage, as they already have built-in audiences ready to engage with any content they release—including music.
Zlatan pointed out that while this development has opened doors for more people to explore creative expression, it also raises concerns about the long-term impact on the quality and authenticity of music being produced.
In his view, the viral nature of social media has made it easier for songs to gain traction based on trends rather than musical depth or artistry. As a result, tracks created by influencers can dominate charts and streaming platforms, even when they may not meet traditional standards of music production.
The artist’s comments reflect a broader conversation within the industry about the balance between accessibility and quality. While technology and social media have democratized content creation, they have also introduced a system where popularity can sometimes outweigh skill or experience.
Zlatan’s concerns are not isolated. Fellow Nigerian singer Kcee has also voiced similar reservations about the growing dominance of influencer culture in music.
Kcee previously noted that although the involvement of influencers in music can offer certain advantages—such as increased visibility and marketing reach—the downsides may be more significant.
According to him, the influence of social media personalities has affected the organic growth of music, including how songs perform on streaming platforms and music charts. He suggested that the industry is increasingly being driven by trends and online engagement rather than genuine audience connection or artistic value.
Together, these perspectives highlight an ongoing shift in the Nigerian entertainment industry, where fame and influence are no longer tied solely to musical talent. Instead, visibility, virality, and digital presence now play a crucial role in determining success.
Despite the concerns, Zlatan did not entirely dismiss the role of influencers in music. Rather, his comments suggest a need for balance—where creativity and accessibility can coexist without compromising the standards that define the industry.
