As anticipation builds for the next edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), an interesting trend has emerged—female talents have largely dominated the prestigious Trailblazer Award over the years.
Since its introduction, the Trailblazer category has been one of the most closely watched at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, celebrating rising stars who have shown exceptional promise and impact early in their careers. A review of past winners reveals that women have consistently led the category, outshining their male counterparts.
Out of eleven editions held so far, seven women have taken home the coveted award, highlighting the growing influence and recognition of female actors and filmmakers within Nollywood. This trend reflects not only talent but also the increasing opportunities for women to shine in the African film industry.
The journey began in 2013 when Ivie Okujaye emerged as the first recipient of the Trailblazer Award. Her win set the tone for what would become a strong female presence in the category.
In 2014, filmmaker Michelle Bello followed, marking a significant moment for women behind the camera. The following year, however, saw a shift when C. J. Obasi claimed the award in 2015, representing one of the few male winners in the category’s history.
The female dominance quickly resumed in subsequent years. Kemi Akindoju took the spotlight in 2016, while Somkele Iyamah was honoured in 2017 for her impressive contributions to film.
In 2018, Bisola Aiyeola added her name to the list, further reinforcing the strong showing of women in the category. Over time, more female stars have continued to rise through the ranks, bringing fresh energy, diversity, and creativity to Nollywood.
The trend has extended into more recent editions, with young talents like Angel Unigwe, who won in 2023, symbolising a new generation of performers making waves in the industry. Her recognition highlights how younger actresses are not only gaining visibility but also earning critical acclaim for their work.
This consistent recognition of female talent underscores a broader shift within Nollywood, where women are increasingly taking on leading roles both on-screen and behind the scenes. From acting to production and directing, female creatives are redefining storytelling and pushing the boundaries of the industry.
While male winners have also made notable contributions, the numbers suggest that women have had a stronger impact in this particular category. The Trailblazer Award, by its nature, rewards innovation, originality, and early influence—qualities that many female winners have demonstrated over the years.
As the industry continues to evolve, the conversation has now shifted to who will emerge as the next Trailblazer. With the 2026 edition of the AMVCA on the horizon, fans and industry observers are already speculating about potential winners.
Will the streak of female winners continue, or will a male actor break the pattern this time?
The question has sparked debate among movie lovers, many of whom are eager to see which rising star will be recognised next. With Nollywood producing a steady stream of fresh talent, the competition is expected to be fierce.
Regardless of who wins, one thing remains clear—the Trailblazer Award continues to serve as a platform for discovering and celebrating the future faces of African cinema.
