Australian teenage sprinter Gout Gout has sent shockwaves through the athletics world after delivering a stunning performance that has already drawn comparisons with legendary figures in the sport.

The 18-year-old produced a historic run in the 200 metres, clocking an incredible 19.67 seconds to claim a national title in Sydney.

With that time, Gout not only secured victory but also set a new world under-20 record, placing his name firmly among the most exciting young talents in global track and field.

His performance has attracted widespread attention, especially as it surpasses a mark previously associated with sprint icon Usain Bolt at a similar stage of his career.

Bolt, widely regarded as one of the greatest sprinters of all time, recorded 19.93 seconds in 2004 as a teenager.

That time stood as a benchmark for years and was part of the early signs of his dominance on the world stage. Gout’s latest achievement has now edged past that mark, highlighting the rapid rise of the Australian youngster.

What makes the feat even more remarkable is that this is Gout’s first officially recognised sub-20-second run under legal wind conditions.

He had previously dipped below that mark with a wind-assisted time of 19.84 seconds, but this latest performance confirms his ability to deliver under standard competition rules.

The teenager has been on an upward trajectory over the past two years. In 2024, he first gained global attention after running 20.06 seconds as a 16-year-old, setting a national record and establishing himself as one of the fastest young sprinters in history.

Although American athlete Erriyon Knighton has posted faster times in the under-20 category, including a 19.49 seconds run that was not officially recognised as a world record, Gout’s 19.67 now stands as the official benchmark for his age group.

Beyond records, his latest run is currently the fastest time recorded in the world this year, underlining his emergence as a serious contender on the global stage.

With such a breakthrough performance at just 18, expectations are already building around what he could achieve in the coming years.

As the athletics community reacts to his record-breaking run, many are beginning to wonder whether Gout Gout could be the next big name to dominate sprinting, following in the footsteps of icons like Bolt.
