“Prayer Has Not Helped Nigeria” – 9ice

Nigerian music star 9ice has sparked fresh debate online after sharing his views on religion and national development, arguing that decades of intense religious devotion have not translated into meaningful progress for Nigeria.

Speaking during a recent public appearance, the veteran singer questioned the continued reliance on prayer as a solution to the country’s deep-rooted challenges.

According to him, both Christianity and Islam widely practiced across Nigeria have not delivered the kind of transformation many citizens expect, despite years of consistent worship and spiritual commitment.

9ice, who openly described himself as a “heathen,” expressed concern over what he sees as an overdependence on religion in everyday life.

He suggested that many Nigerians prioritise religious activities at the expense of practical action, often choosing to pray over issues that require direct solutions.

In his view, this mindset may be slowing down the pace of development in critical areas such as governance, infrastructure, and economic growth.

The singer also pointed out what he believes is a contradiction in the nation’s strong religious identity. He noted that despite the high number of churches and mosques across the country, social and economic conditions remain difficult for many citizens.

For him, this raises questions about whether the current approach to faith is truly helping to address real-life problems.

Drawing comparisons with countries like the United Kingdom, 9ice argued that societies with less visible religious intensity often appear more organised and economically stable.

He claimed that in such places, people tend to focus more on productivity and structured systems, rather than relying heavily on spiritual interventions.

His remarks have since generated mixed reactions, with some agreeing that Nigerians need to strike a better balance between faith and action, while others believe his comments undermine the importance of spirituality in people’s lives.

Critics have also pointed out that national development is influenced by a wide range of factors, including leadership, policy decisions, and institutional strength not just religion.

While the conversation continues, 9ice’s comments have once again highlighted the ongoing tension between faith and practical governance in Nigeria.

Whether one agrees with his stance or not, his remarks have opened up a broader discussion about the role religion should play in shaping the country’s future and addressing its challenges.
