The Nigerian Navy has confirmed that personnel involved in a violent altercation with soldiers in Bayelsa State have been arrested and are currently facing disciplinary proceedings.
The incident occurred on Friday during the official visit of President Bola Tinubu to the state, where a public confrontation between uniformed officers escalated into a chaotic street fight.
A viral video circulating online showed military personnel in uniform engaging in a physical clash, drawing widespread attention and condemnation from Nigerians.
In the footage, a Hilux vehicle marked “Naval Police” was seen at the centre of the incident after its driver stepped out and exchanged heated words with occupants of another vehicle. The situation quickly escalated when a soldier, reportedly armed with a rifle, approached and allegedly struck the naval personnel, triggering a wider confrontation.
What began as a verbal exchange soon degenerated into a full-blown melee, with reports indicating that sticks and other objects were used as the confrontation intensified in full public view.
The clash reportedly happened shortly after President Bola Tinubu concluded an official engagement in Bayelsa State, raising concerns about discipline and coordination among security operatives assigned to high-profile events.
The incident has since sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians describing the behaviour of the officers as embarrassing and questioning the professionalism of security personnel deployed for presidential duties.
In response, the Navy confirmed that those involved have been taken into custody and are undergoing internal disciplinary processes in line with military regulations.
Director of Naval Information, Abi Folorunso, stated in a post on X that appropriate administrative action is already underway to address the situation.
“The affected personnel are in custody and already undergoing appropriate administrative and disciplinary procedures in accordance with extant military regulations,” he said.
Security experts have also weighed in on the incident, noting that such public altercations between armed forces personnel could undermine public confidence in the military and raise concerns about inter-agency coordination during joint operations.
While investigations are ongoing, authorities are expected to determine what led to the confrontation and whether any breaches of conduct occurred during the president’s visit.
The Nigerian military has in recent years emphasized discipline and inter-service cooperation, particularly during presidential movements and high-security assignments. However, this latest incident has reignited conversations about enforcement of professional standards within the armed forces.
As disciplinary proceedings continue, Nigerians are watching closely for accountability measures and possible sanctions against those found culpable in the clash.
