The much-anticipated biographical film Michael, centered on the life of legendary pop star Michael Jackson, has made an impressive debut at the North American box office, grossing $97 million over the weekend.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate, the film chronicles Jackson’s rise from a young performer in the Jackson 5 to becoming one of the most influential figures in global music. The late icon is portrayed by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in his first major film role.
Industry analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research described the film’s opening as remarkable, highlighting its strong commercial performance.
“This is a record-shattering opening for a musical biography,” Gross said.
He noted that the film appears to be resonating with audiences, largely due to its nostalgic tone and celebration of Jackson’s legacy.
“It is playing as a feel-good, nostalgic appreciation,” he added, while acknowledging that critical reception has been mixed.
According to Gross, some reviewers have taken issue with the film’s approach to certain aspects of Jackson’s life.
“Most critics feel the film is superficial and avoids the complicated parts of the performer’s life, including allegations of sexual misbehaviour,” he said, revealing that discussions for a possible sequel are already underway.
The film’s success is not limited to North America. Having already premiered in select European markets, Michael has amassed close to $220 million globally, based on figures from Exhibitor Relations.
In second place at the weekend box office is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which earned an additional $21.2 million. The animated production from Universal Pictures and Illumination continues to perform strongly, surpassing $775 million worldwide after three weeks at the top.
Taking the third spot is Project Hail Mary, produced by Amazon MGM Studios. The movie stars Ryan Gosling as a teacher who becomes an astronaut tasked with saving Earth, and it has already grossed nearly $600 million globally.
In fourth place is The Mummy, directed by Lee Cronin and released by Warner Bros., earning $5.6 million over the weekend.
Completing the top five is The Drama, a dark romantic comedy from A24, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. The film added $2.6 million, bringing its total global earnings to $80 million.
Other films in the top 10 include Hoppers ($1.9 million), You, Me & Tuscany ($1.5 million), Over Your Dead Body ($1.4 million), I Swear ($640,000), and Normal ($625,000).
With its strong opening weekend and growing international earnings, Michael is shaping up to be one of the biggest film releases of the year, driven by enduring global fascination with Michael Jackson’s life and legacy.
