Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mercy Aigbe has responded after a fan stirred conversation online by ranking her among the top actresses in the industry.
The movie star, who has been making headlines in recent weeks, reacted via her Snapchat page after a follower referred to her as the “003” in Nollywood’s unofficial hierarchy of leading actresses. While she did not directly address the ranking with words, Aigbe posted a video of herself vibing to Fast Fast Comot by Mavo—a song that emphasizes living freely, moving on quickly, and not being held back by opinions.
Her subtle response quickly sparked mixed reactions from social media users, many of whom shared differing opinions on her place in the industry.
One user, Blair_vega_blessing, wrote, “I think it’s 004 sef. Funke, Iyabo Ojo, Toyin and Mercy,” referencing fellow Nollywood heavyweights Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, and Toyin Abraham.
Another commenter, just_temmy, disagreed with that ranking, writing, “003 is higher, cos you’re not close,” while thorin3678 added, “She no sabi act anyways.”
Some users questioned the need for such comparisons in the first place. _omolew_7 wrote, “But what’s all this competition for?” while eniitan_xx suggested Aigbe was avoiding unnecessary drama, stating, “She no want wahala.”
Others pointed fingers at fans for fueling rivalry among celebrities. Kozzy_jay commented, “Fans dey crãze well well sha,” while officialtedi_wealth added, “Na fans dey cause majority of the industry wahala.” Debbytopaz echoed a similar sentiment, writing, “Fans are the problem.”
Meanwhile, some reactions were more critical. Ahmaadmakama questioned the ranking ambition, asking, “Na 001 you wan be?” while Ayoolaolanrewajuwaliu bluntly stated, “She’s not even in the top 20 list.”
Despite the divided opinions, Aigbe’s calm and indirect response appeared to reflect her decision to stay above the fray rather than engage in the debate.
Over the years, Mercy Aigbe has built a strong reputation in Nollywood, not only as an actress but also as a filmmaker. Her career spans more than two decades, during which she has consistently remained relevant through reinvention and adaptability.
At the 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, Aigbe clinched the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Farmer’s Bride, beating several notable names in the industry, including Meg Otanwa, Tina MBA, Ireti Doyle, Ini Dima Okojie, Omoni Oboli, and Darasimi Nadi.
Ahead of the awards ceremony, she reflected on her journey, noting that consistency, authenticity, and the ability to evolve have been key to her longevity. She also expressed gratitude for the continued recognition she receives, despite being in the industry for over 20 years.
Aigbe has also made significant strides as a producer. Her debut cinema project, Ada Omo Daddy, was a commercial success, grossing over N187 million and ranking among the top three highest-grossing Nollywood films of 2023. The achievement was particularly notable given the stiff competition from industry giants like Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham.
Following that success, she released another cinema project, Thin Line, which also performed well at the box office, earning over N100 million.
Earlier this year, the actress shared that one of her greatest joys as a filmmaker is seeing her work resonate with audiences. She expressed pride in how her projects continue to connect emotionally with viewers and inspire meaningful conversations.
While the debate over rankings in Nollywood continues, Mercy Aigbe’s reaction suggests she remains focused on her craft rather than public opinion. Her body of work and continued success indicate that, regardless of where fans place her, she remains a formidable force in the Nigerian film industry.
