The story behind the collaboration between Davido and Nicki Minaj didn’t begin in a recording booth or through a formal industry arrangement. Instead, it started quietly on social media, long before either artist directly interacted.
Davido has now revealed that Nicki Minaj had already been aware of him online for years, even though he had no idea at the time. What looked like a regular social media presence was actually a one-sided connection he only discovered much later.
“Nicki Minaj had been following me on Instagram for 5 years without me knowing,” he said.
That revelation changed his perception of how far his reach had extended digitally, but the real turning point came when he decided to take action himself. Rather than waiting for any formal introduction, he reached out to her through Instagram.
“I finally sent her a DM, and to my shock, she replied asking for my number,” he added.
The response opened a direct line of communication between both artists, something Davido did not expect when he first sent the message. What began as a casual attempt to connect quickly shifted into a more serious exchange about music.
After they started talking, Davido saw an opportunity to share his work. He sent her a track, not knowing if it would lead anywhere, but hopeful it would catch her attention.
“That’s how I sent her the song which later became ‘Holy Ground’,” he explained.
That record eventually developed into a full collaboration, bringing both artists together on a single project. The song, Holy Ground, became one of the key tracks on his album A Better Time, and it introduced a new international dimension to his sound and audience reach.
The partnership between the two artists showed how unexpected digital interactions can evolve into major creative projects when timing and communication align.
