Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has sparked conversations online after sharing details about the personal life of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, particularly regarding his relationships with women.

Speaking during a recent Instagram livestream, Seun addressed long-standing claims and criticisms surrounding Fela’s lifestyle and the circumstances of his death.

The singer pushed back against narratives suggesting that the Afrobeat legend was solely responsible for contracting HIV, offering a different perspective on his father’s personal choices and beliefs.

According to Seun, Fela operated a unique system within his household, where his wives were not restricted from having relationships with other men.

He explained that his father believed in personal freedom and applied the same standards to the women in his life. However, he noted that there were boundaries, particularly that such relationships should not be brought into Fela’s home.

Seun described this approach as one of the decisions his father made that he now considers a mistake. Reflecting candidly, he suggested that Fela’s openness in relationships may have contributed to the circumstances that later affected his health. Despite this, he maintained that it was unfair to reduce Fela’s legacy to such narratives alone.

The discussion was triggered by comments circulating online, where some critics questioned why Fela continues to be celebrated despite controversies surrounding his personal life. In response, Seun emphasised that no individual is without flaws, adding that his father, like many others, made choices that had consequences.

Beyond the controversy, Seun reiterated that Fela’s contributions to music and society remain significant.

Widely regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat, Fela blended elements of jazz, funk, and traditional African sounds to create a genre that gained global recognition.

His music often carried strong political messages, challenging authority and speaking against corruption and injustice in Nigeria.

Seun also touched on the frequent comparisons between his father and modern-day artists, a topic he has repeatedly criticised.

Earlier in 2026, he was involved in a public exchange with Wizkid after warning fans against labeling contemporary stars as the “new Fela.” He argued that such comparisons diminish the originality and impact of his father’s legacy.

Over the years, Seun Kuti has established himself as a vocal figure, not just in music but also in social and political discussions. His recent comments have once again placed him at the center of public debate, with opinions divided over his revelations about Fela’s personal life.

While reactions continue to pour in, the conversation highlights the enduring influence of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, whose life and legacy remain subjects of both admiration and scrutiny decades after his passing.
