Nigerian music star Crayon has opened up about a deeply personal phase in his life, revealing how overwhelming pressure from both his family expectations and the demands of the music industry pushed him into a difficult mental state in 2022.
Speaking during a live conversation with media personality Carter Efe, the singer gave a candid account of how things became increasingly difficult for him as he tried to balance success in music with personal responsibilities.
According to him, the situation gradually built up until it became too heavy to manage on his own.
He explained that 2022 stood out as one of the most challenging periods of his journey, noting that he was dealing with multiple layers of stress at once.
The pressure to succeed, remain relevant in a fast-moving industry, and meet expectations from home all collided, creating a mental and emotional strain that eventually affected his wellbeing.
During the conversation, Crayon spoke openly about how serious the situation became, revealing that he had to receive medical attention and go through an extended therapy process before regaining stability. His words were direct and emotional as he revisited that moment in his life.
“In 2022, I had mental health issues from all sorts of stress family pressure, industry pressure, and trying to be number one. I was hospitalised for a long therapy session, then I came out and dropped Labalaba and Overloading.”
After the period of treatment and recovery, he gradually returned to the music scene with renewed energy. Rather than stepping away from his craft, he found strength in continuing his work, which eventually led to the release of songs like “Labalaba” and “Overloading,” marking his return to active music production and public visibility.
His journey reflects the reality many young artists face while navigating fame, expectations, and personal wellbeing at the same time. While success often appears glamorous from the outside, Crayon’s experience sheds light on the emotional weight that can come with rapid rise in the entertainment industry.
Despite the challenges he faced, he has continued to grow within the Nigerian music space, maintaining his place as one of the vibrant voices under the Mavin Records label. His openness about his experience has also contributed to wider conversations around mental health and the importance of seeking help when needed.
