Veteran Nigerian artiste African China has opened up about the dangers he faced at the peak of his career, revealing that his socially conscious music once made him a target for both security operatives and street groups.

Speaking during an appearance on the Beer Parlor Talk podcast, the Mr President crooner recounted how his outspoken songs, which tackled political and societal issues, placed him in constant danger and forced him to adopt unusual survival strategies.

According to the singer, the nature of his music attracted unwanted attention from authorities and local groups, making it difficult for him to move freely or perform without fear. He explained that at the time, he had to remain constantly alert, as threats could arise unexpectedly.

African China disclosed that he went as far as learning martial arts to defend himself, noting that physical preparedness became essential for survival in the industry during that period. Beyond that, he also explored spiritual means of protection, believing it was necessary given the level of risk he faced.

He further described how he was frequently pursued by the police, members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), and area boys, all of whom, he claimed, attempted to intimidate or harass him. Despite this, he continued to perform, often relying on the support of his audience for safety.

The singer revealed that fans would sometimes alert him when potential threats were approaching, allowing him to act quickly and avoid confrontation. This network of informal support, he said, played a crucial role in helping him evade danger on several occasions.

Interestingly, he noted that his ability to escape these situations led some to believe he possessed supernatural powers. According to him, members of OPC at the time suspected he was using spiritual means to “disappear,” not realising that he was simply being tipped off by people in the crowd.

Reflecting on that period, African China described it as one of constant tension, where he had to balance his passion for music with the need to stay safe. He maintained that his challenges were largely a result of the messages in his songs, which resonated with the public but also stirred controversy.

African China rose to fame in the early 2000s with hit tracks that addressed governance, inequality, and everyday struggles faced by Nigerians. While his music earned him a loyal fan base and widespread recognition, it also placed him at odds with certain authorities who were uncomfortable with his outspoken style.

His revelations offer a glimpse into the risks faced by artists who use their platforms to address sensitive issues, highlighting the sacrifices and pressures that can come with creating socially conscious music.
