Nollywood actress Uche Ogbodo has responded to criticism from social media users who accused her of promoting Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery following the reported death of a woman after a cosmetic procedure in Lagos.

The controversy arose after reports emerged that a socialite and influencer identified as Elena Jessica died following complications from a second butt lift surgery at Cynosure Clinic in Lagos. According to reports circulating online, the woman allegedly suffered severe complications after the procedure, sparking renewed debate about the safety of cosmetic surgeries such as BBL.

Following the incident, Ogbodo revealed that many people had taken to her social media pages to attack her over her past posts and videos about the procedure.

In a video shared on her Instagram page, the actress addressed the backlash directly, stating that while cosmetic surgery carries risks, it is not the only medical procedure that can lead to complications.

“People are dragging me that I am promoting BBL despite the fact that a lady just lost her life to it. Yes, BBL is risky, but which surgery isn’t? People d!e from fibroid surgery, C-section, and even headaches,” she said.

The actress emphasised that individuals who choose to undergo cosmetic procedures should prioritise proper information and medical safety rather than making decisions impulsively.

“Just make sure you are well-informed about the surgery you want. Use a good hospital and a good doctor. Make sure you don’t allow infection to enter your wound and take your aftercare seriously,” she advised.

The tragic incident has reignited conversations on social media about the growing popularity of cosmetic surgeries among young women, particularly procedures aimed at enhancing body shape.

In recent years, BBL procedures have become increasingly common among celebrities, influencers, and social media personalities seeking curvier body figures. However, medical experts often warn that the surgery carries significant risks if not performed under proper medical supervision.

Ogbodo’s remarks have divided opinion online, with some users agreeing that individuals should be free to make choices about their bodies, while others argued that celebrities and influencers should be careful about promoting cosmetic procedures to their followers.

The debate has also drawn reactions from other Nigerian celebrities who have previously shared their views on body enhancement surgeries.

Media personality Toke Makinwa recently spoke about her own experience after undergoing a BBL procedure. In a post shared on social media weeks earlier, she revealed that she had reconsidered her preference for a larger backside.

The former radio host shared photos of herself and admitted that she once admired the look but now believes that phase of her life has passed.

Similarly, actress Mary Njoku has previously urged women to embrace their natural appearance rather than focusing solely on physical alterations.

Addressing the growing trend of cosmetic surgery, Njoku encouraged women to invest more in their personal development and intellectual growth.

According to her, what truly distinguishes a woman is not her physical appearance but the strength of her mind and the value she brings through her skills and knowledge.

Media personality Daddy Freeze also weighed in on the issue in the past. In a social media post, he compared the look of BBL to that of a camel while questioning the benefits of undergoing such a procedure.

Aside from the medical risks, he said he personally did not see any significant advantage in pursuing the surgery.

Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has also expressed concerns about the long-term implications of cosmetic body enhancements.

The Nollywood star argued that the trend may not necessarily provide the lasting benefits some women expect, particularly when it comes to relationships and marriage. He also questioned why many husbands are not willing to sponsor their wives for such procedures if they are considered valuable.

As discussions around cosmetic surgery continue to grow online, medical professionals and public figures alike have repeatedly stressed the importance of safety, proper medical consultation, and informed decision-making for anyone considering such procedures.

For now, Ogbodo maintains that while cosmetic surgery is a personal choice, individuals must take responsibility for educating themselves about the risks involved before undergoing any operation.
