Adeyemi Kafayat, the wife of Nigerian singer Shanko Rasheed, has publicly shared painful details about her troubled marriage and the events surrounding the death of their son.
In an emotional interview with Biola Bayo, Kafayat recounted the distressing moments following the passing of their child and alleged that the singer accused her of being responsible for the tragedy.
According to her, the confrontation occurred at the hospital where their son died. She said the situation quickly escalated when the singer arrived and began accusing her in front of others.
“When my son died, I called him. I didn’t even know my son had died. They just told me to excuse them. I called Rasheed again. He came and started chasing me around, claiming that I was responsible for the death of his son. People stood up for him, and the doctor hid me somewhere. I couldn’t have killed my son,” she said.
The grieving mother insisted she could never harm her child and explained that she had endured great hardship raising him.
“I raised Jamal with so much pain. I can’t kill him; everyone knows. Jamal was the reason I didn’t get tired of life,” she said.
Kafayat further alleged that the singer has taken custody of their two remaining children since the incident and that she has not seen them for over a week.
“He took my remaining two kids away. Someone who knows nothing about raising children. He would smoke even in the presence of his children. I would be the one to take my kids off his premises. I have not seen my children in eight days. I don’t know where he has taken my children to,” she stated.
She also claimed that the singer does not have a stable residence and sometimes moves from place to place.
“He is homeless, and he sleeps anywhere. It’s because he knows I have nobody,” she added.
During the interview, Kafayat also opened up about the early days of their relationship, alleging that the singer was her first sexual partner and that their relationship was marked by abuse.
“He was the one who disvirgined me. The baby died inside me because of the stress I went through during the pregnancy. I would run away from home to a friend, and he would still come there to beat me. One day, he beat Jamal, and it was too much,” she alleged.
She further explained that financial difficulties worsened their situation at one point, forcing the family to seek shelter in a church after their house rent expired.
“A year’s rent expired, and he couldn’t renew the rent. We were sleeping in the church. My son fell sick, and I called his father. Please have mercy on me, help me with this boy. I don’t have legs to take care of this boy,” she recalled.
According to her, when she informed the singer about their son’s deteriorating health, he allegedly declined to come immediately.
“Today is the eighth day since my son died. Just come and see this boy, I don’t understand his breathing. My son was gradually leaving at that time. He said he couldn’t come because he needed to fix his car. That I should help him raise one hundred and sixty thousand. I did all I could, but the boy still died at the hospital,” she said.
This is not the first time Kafayat has publicly spoken about the situation. Shortly after news of their son’s death emerged, she released a video online accusing the singer of abandoning her while she was sick and struggling to care for their three children.
In that earlier video, she also alleged that the family had been served a quit notice by their landlord and that she had taken a loan to help pay the rent after the singer asked her to do so. According to her, he later collected the money but left her to handle the situation alone.
She also appealed to Nigerians for help, claiming that the singer had taken their children away.
The tragic situation has drawn attention online, with many social media users expressing sympathy for the grieving mother and calling for clarity on the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and the family dispute.
Sadly, the loss of children has affected several Nigerian families in recent years. In 2024, actor Francis Duru announced the death of his son, Ifeanyi, describing him as a brave fighter who struggled valiantly for his life.
Similarly, comedian Aphrican Ace and his wife also experienced tragedy after losing their newborn son shortly after birth. The comedian shared the devastating news online, saying the pain was unlike anything he had ever felt.
In another heartbreaking incident, skit maker Olagunju Solomon Olamide, popularly known as Akika, lost his son in 2023, a loss he revealed on social media on Father’s Day.
As conversations around Kafayat’s allegations continue, many observers say the situation highlights the emotional and social challenges families face when personal tragedies become public disputes.
