Nollywood actor Olaniyi Afonja, widely known by his stage name Sanyeri, has expressed deep regret over not furthering his education earlier in life, admitting that his youthful perception of schooling prevented him from fully understanding its long-term value.

The comic star made the revelation during an appearance on the television programme Behind The Fame, where he reflected on his upbringing, career journey and personal development.

Speaking candidly, Sanyeri explained that as a child, he viewed education as an obligation imposed by parents rather than an opportunity for self-improvement.

“When children are in school, they think education is for their parents, not realizing it is for their own future. Back then, it felt like punishment,” he said.

According to the actor, it was only with maturity and life experience that he began to appreciate the true importance of formal education. He acknowledged that his earlier mindset limited his academic growth, a decision he now looks back on with regret.

“I regret not furthering my education. I have taken steps to continue, and when the result comes out, I will show it,” he added. “Nowadays, education has no age limit.”

Sanyeri’s remarks highlight a broader conversation about lifelong learning and the idea that academic pursuit is not restricted to a particular age. His statement that “education has no age limit” underscores his belief that personal growth remains possible regardless of stage in life.

The actor, who has spent over three decades in the Yoruba movie industry, is best known for his comic roles.

However, he has previously clarified that he did not begin his career as a comic actor. Over the years, he carved a niche for himself in comedy, becoming one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba-language films.

During the interview, Sanyeri also paid tribute to individuals who influenced his early acting career. He mentioned the late Prince Adeoye and Hakeem Ajala as key figures who helped shape his journey in the entertainment industry. Their mentorship, he noted, played an important role in his development as a performer.

He further explained how he adopted the name “Sanyeri,” revealing that it originally belonged to another performer.

According to him, the name became permanently associated with him after he stepped in to play a role when the original actor fell ill. The performance resonated with audiences, and the name stuck, eventually becoming his professional identity.

Sanyeri’s story serves as both a reflection and a lesson. While he has achieved remarkable success in Nollywood and built a lasting career in entertainment, he acknowledges that education remains a crucial pillar of personal development.

His openness about regret and his decision to return to school may inspire others who feel it is too late to pursue academic goals.
