Popular Nigerian comedian I Go Save sparked a fresh wave of citizen criticism against government accountability this week when he publicly challenged the Minister of Works over the deteriorating Benin Warri road.

The comedian’s comments quickly went viral, with many Nigerians sharing his frustration over the dangerous highway.

“Minister of Works sir, abeg help us,” I Go Save said in the clip shared on social media. “The road between Benin City and Warri is no longer a road it’s a reality TV survival show. By the time you finish that journey, you qualify for Olympic hurdles.”

Continuing with his trademark mix of humour and urgency, he added:

“Instead of stressing women, come and stress this road small. Fix am for us before our shock absorbers file for divorce."

His public call for action comes at a time when several prominent figures, including Minister of Works David Nweze Umahi, are also under scrutiny over controversies involving women and allegations of misconduct.

One major dispute centres on businesswoman TracyNither Nicholas Ohiri, who has accused Umahi of failing to pay millions of naira owed for campaign materials supplied during his time as governor, and of making unwanted personal advances toward her. Ohiri alleges that, on one occasion, Umahi entered her hotel room wearing only a towel and made inappropriate overtures  claims the minister has vehemently denied.

Ohiri says the debt started at about N25.4 million and ballooned to roughly N304 million with interest after years of non‑payment. She has faced arrest and court proceedings related to the dispute, which rights activists have publicly protested, accusing authorities of using police powers to intimidate her over what they argue should have been a civil financial matter.

Umahi has repeatedly dismissed the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated, saying he has never harassed any woman and urging Nigerians to focus on national development over social media controversy. At a recent public engagement, he said if credible women like Senator Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan had made such claims, “my face would be bolder.”

Analysts say I Go Save’s road advocacy and the ongoing Umahi women‑linked controversy reflect a broader trend of Nigerian citizens using humour and social pressure to demand accountability from leaders.
